every freekin model i come up with has red triangles. there is nothing i can ever do to prevent this. and its making me want to yell curse words at everything i hate my life right now.. i used to love halo but im always ending up fixing these gd models that were perfectly fine in google sketchup but ALWAYS import crappily into 3ds. and i dont know how to deal with it. is there a program that automatically fixes red triangles???? or am i going to be forced to stop making halo maps? im really mad... and i need a solution NOW or im just about to say eff it.

Don't use sketchup, there is a reason nobody here uses it. It works fine for making models for looks but it is not made for gaming. If you have 3ds, just use that, it will save you a lot of trouble.

Gmax or the student copy of 3DSMax. Learn them. Love them. Make better maps in them.

then... there really is no easy way to make a halo map then is there except for the stupid displacement heightmap outdoors meathod. i want to be able to make buildings! and be able to walk thru them! im so frusterated! and it seems like everyones always too busy to show me how to make indoor maps. and when they do show me i dont get it. its freekin difficult. i feel like halo hates me when it comes to creating stuff. it keeps injuring my happiness. total blasphamy and assault upon my entire life. im only good at first person models and things that dont have issues with red triangles..... why must tool be so difficult????!!!!!

you know? tool.exe really is a tool. its not a good tool either. it was made in china. and they printed "tool.exe" millions upon millions daily. how the *insert profanity here* did the people at dungie and mickeysoft make their garbage? how can they make freekin millions and were so barely known! WHAT IS THIS CRAP!

How to make an interior with 3ds max:

First, to make things easier, press F4 to go into mixed geometry/outline mode:

Let me explain the toolbar, If you don't already know how to use it's functions:

....NVM... you should already know that these do.

When you start up 3DSmax, there should be a properties box on the right that tells you shapes that can be created, such as boxes, geometric shapes, and a plane

First, click on Plane and then click and drag a square or rectangle on the viewport labeled Perspective, and a parameters window should give you info on that new plane: But for now, just set the length and width to 280, and the length_segments and width_segments to 3:

When things start to look fine, use the move tool to put the plane at 0,0,0(you don't need to do this, it's just for precise measurement).

If you use the Edge tool combined with the move tool, you can create an outline like so:

Now all you have to do to make a wall is click the Polygon tool and then select all of the outer faces(you can hold control and just click them), go into the Edit geometry section on the right and click the window button next to Extrude, a window should pop up.

In this window, set the extrude height to 125, click apply and you have a wall.

Or... use DEEhunter's Toolio (http://www.krueger.webuda.com/TOOLIO/toolio.zip) which ignores errors while importing geometry. After placing the contents of that folder in your HCE directory, just type "toolio" when you'd normally type "tool" to do stuff.

I feel yah man. Gmax has been hectic lately. I haven't successfully made and exported a single BSP yet. It's so hard. Why is there no inset or bridge tool. I have literally watched about 100 tutorials spending hours and hours watching tutorial after tutorials. And it has worked, I'm comfortable with the interface, I know how to use a lot of different tools. I've gotten used to most things. The interface and tools aren't that complicated. Using them to make cool stuff is a different story. But, I'm hammering away, I'm a pretty chill guy, so I'm just waiting until I can make cool stuff. Then I'll reign supreme. bwahahahaha

No, I'm all chill right now. At least I am comfortable with the interface and a lot of the tools and methods.

Damn, no need to hang yourself lmao. Don't use stupid little programs like Google Sketchup.

Or you could just select ALL verts (Ctrl + A) and weld by 0.01

And no, you shouldn't just use Dee's tool to ignore the errors... that is for quick testing only. Error's are not there to annoy you but to help you fix problems which SHOULD BE FIXED.

...stupid.

Sketchup is like AutoCAD
yea, they both suck.
They are different tools for different jobs. Autocad is used to design or present products or items that you need precise measurements and/or where or you wish to manufacture something that will be milled or outputted to a CNC machine or to computer simulation and flow dynamics software for example. Sketch-Up is a rapid visualization tool to very quickly present concepts or ideas before investing time and money. 3DS and Maya are detail graphical tools designed to visually 3D model real life objects and depict lighting and aspect.

thank you for all the help. i have relatively simple ideas for maps yet even the simplest ideas cannot transfer from sketchup. lol the closest ive ever gotten was a simple flat box to make into a door. its surprisingly frusterating how easy it is to take an idea to put into sketchup but getting it into halo from there has always been difficult.

how this guy black crypt did it is really confusing me!

http://forum.halomaps.org/index.cfm%3Fpage=topic&topicID=36681

i could really use his help right now...
would anyone be interested in taking concepts or ideas for maps that ive had in sketchup and show me how to create the geometry for them them in 3ds? i have a couple examples that i really have a lot of interest in that are still very illusive to me.

simply open the model in sketchup and export it as .3ds and import it in 3dsmax, that's it.

free google sketchup or pro-version?
