I dont know what this means: ### WARNING found nearly coplanar surfaces (red and green).

I have been getting this error for a while, and i am portaling for the first time, and i have read the HEK tutorial, asked some friends, and now im at my last resort. You guys. Any help will be appreciated, any trolls will not.

The coplanar error is when you have two faces that are almost planar but not exactly.
Imagine you had 2 perfectly flat pieces of paper. They would be planar. Now, if you crinkled one, it wouldn't be planar anymore. The error basically means that you have a vertex that like, 0.01 units higher than the others. You can either move that one vertex down, or find the faces, select them, and then hit "make planar" (you must be in editable poly mode). Usually for me, making planar doesn't work, so I just move it very slightly in one direction. Small enough that the difference isn't noticed ingame, but big enough to make the error go away.



E: and sorry I don't know anything about portals :S
what did the HEK tutorial error section say about that error?

E. Just fixed the planes, and now my errors just dissapeared, except for this last one im about to find out:

Try simpler portals. 2x2x2 or 3x3x2 for starters, but not 16x16x1.
You don't need to divide the +sky that much
Be sure there's no duplicate faces, that your verts are welded, and that your outer portal edges (open edges) are out of the boxmap

You must redo your portals,also make sure every edge od the portal comes out of the skybox slightly on the sides bottom and top.Make sure every box or cluster in the portal is sealed at all it's edges.

And a note to many portals are bad also. And are they +portal or +exactportals.


If there not +exactportals wait until you start them there way harder to setup.

the boxes are grids, the exactportals are on the tunnels. i know how to portal correctly

Obviously you don't if you're getting this error. For +Portal, it divides the loose parts of BSPs. Making so many is kinda pointless. You can do 5 x 5 and be fine... There's a limit on the amount of portals you can use ( not sure if it's Hard limit or ''Average'' limit). I think it's around 200 portals... not sure. If you have an exact portal that's 30 triangles, count it as 30 portals for this limit. RPG_Beta6.2 sits on this limit. I even had to delete a few portals to have it compile

Someone really should make a video tutorial on portals. The original HEK tutorial is okay, but it helps if someone walks you through it.

I've found this method to give the least hassle:
Make a plane, wider than the boxmap, segmented about 5x5 for 25k tris, and above the terrain, but in the boxmap. It divides most of the sky from the terrain. Convert to mesh.
Select the inner, aka: closed visable edges, extrude to below the map.
Delete duplicate faces using Ignore Backfacing, double-check using Show Normals (adjust normal length, 200+).
Apply +portal & link to frame.
Tool, and if there's errors, they're probably unearthed edges.
If a portal edge passes thrue the bsp, it should only be at one point. So some invisable diagonal edges may be in and out of some slopes. May need to move some verts up or down, may need to turn edges, may even divide edges.
Could also snug down the horizontal plane. If a cluster is hidden behind a hill, it wont be rendered.
Tip: Hold your breath for a long time and then read it and it'll be like a video tutorial.
