I know everyone considers 3ds to be superior to gmax. But what exactly does 3ds have that gmax doesn't. Is it missing some tools? Does it have computability issues?

I know for sure it doesn't have rendering, but I think it also isn't compatible with some scripts or filetypes.

-Compatibility. It can open .gmax and .3ds, and import GBXmodels and OBJs.
-No rendering.
-Few advanced modifiers and extended primitives, etc.
Otherwise you should be able to do all your halo stuff. Gmax is halo-compatible with UVWs, meshes, materials IDs, etc.

So basically, you don't have a couple of advanced modeling tools, and you can't render: meaning you can't make an actual movie in gmax and you can't make really sweet pictures from gmax. But couldn't you just make something, texture it etc. and then just take a snapshot of that viewport and voila?

there is a render plugin/maxscript for gmax.
The main difference is that gmax has a VERY limited compatibility.
