Well you can use an external software to create a virtual LAN in which this can be acquired. There is one program I know of, Hamachi, that I have played with a number of people this way and had great results. Never figured out much about the program itself though so ask around if you are having issues. I know that there are others around that use that program.

LAN? Well, first you have to set up your computers to have a LAN. If it's just two computers, you can go to your network connections, choose the adapter you use, go to its properties, go to the TCP/IPv4 properties, and set a number for your IP, a subnet mask (done for you), and your friend's IP. Then have the friend do the same numbers, but switching their own ip and your ip. Connect with wireless or cat5 and you should be able to connect to each other.
Halo's ports should be opened or something, just host an LAN game and check if your friend can see it in the LAN lobby.

Checked and approved:
LAN works trough Tunngle.
I tested it with 1.00v meanwhile,The settings are:

Connection type: T1/LAN
Server Port: 11155 (this is Tunngle`s server port)
Client port: 2303 (Default)

Check out LANoiPro, I dunno, just check it out.

Or just stick an ethernet cord into one computer, and put it directly into the next computer.
