do you think this could/should be done?
link multiple large bsps together in one single player scenario, and have teleporters connect these "areas" to the main bsp, through things such as doors, cave entrances etc., etc.
have a system of randomly moving ai of different types throughout the map (like animals, maybe monsters from area 51 - 55, bandits, and/or terrorists, or extremists groups, and civilians) according to like roads, paths and areas where they would reside (EG: maybe the mummy from the mummy map, inside a cave or tomb)
use scripts like in the rpg campaign to where you can speak to certain people in the map, maybe leaders of factions or injured marines you find or guns for hire, give the player options like saying press E to ask the AI to join your group, press space to attack the ai, and correspondingly, if you press space, the ai_allegiance for the team index of which he resides that was in place is made false, and the character would in turn attck the player. if you press E, a script telling the ai to follow the player would be entered, and using firing positon migrations the ai would follow the player
in a similar fasion, team indexes could be changed in conversations if you say, ask to join an extremist group, the US military would turn against you and the extremist group would be no longer attack you via ai allegiance scripts
there could also be a points system, in which for killing enemies you get points and using those points you could buy weapons, health packs (which would be disguised has food) or overshields (disguised as bullet proof vests maybe?) or you coud buy weapons or maybe emergency kits sort of like the survival kit that was released which the player would pick up like an oddball, throw down and it would create a pistol and a health pack. points could also buy the player more companions such as mercenary groups (similar to gammas mod where you could pay for groups of marines) that would in turn follow you around the map.Maybe even have vehicles you could purchase? These things would be bought through a "shop" in the pause menu
have the map be completely free roam, with checkpoints set throughout the map so your game would save often and you could load your checkpoint whenever you want from the main halo menu
the goal? a single player free roam rpg map, for players to play when they're bored.
I imagine it would be similar to fallout (I luvs me teh new vegas!!!!) where it takes place in a post apocalyptic world, where there are different factions, and you use modern day weapons as well as some futuristic weapons. the difference would be everything else. my idea for the story is you're a U.S. marine who awakes next to his downed chopper. the last thing you remember is back in vietnam (yeah, way back in the 60's) your helicopter was shot down by VC, and now you awake in this strange world (probably year 2065 post apocalyptic america and the apocalypse [nuclear war with korea?] was in 2015) you then find weapons and travel the new world (I imagine maybe there can be grass and trees growing now due to time past ajnd relief efforts by US marine rebels trying to restore the area to its pre war glory).
the factions (groups and teams) could be terrorist rebel groups, civilans and travelers or traders of different towns/villages, area 51 - 55 monsters, zombies (maybe) and the mummy (reskinned flood) from the mummy maps, maybe even some type of aliens, and lastly US marine rebel groups (AKA the good guys)
weapons could be ones from the site like the m16, mp5, m4 and other modern weapons, maybe the ones from the DMT Upskirts map or the flood zombie map that featured an m4ai with ADS
EDIT: there could also be music set to play in certain areas of the map like region themed backround music.
What do you guys think? should/could it be done?

This sounds like a crazed out version of Retribution.

Yeah, I had an idea about an ODST single player level on New Mombasa where the player just roams around the map and fights AI, the level would never end, and the player could just roam and do whatever they wanted in New Mombasa, but the scripting perhaps could be annoying, but theoretically using a ton of trigger volumes, it's possible.

Yes, everything you've said is possible within the Halo CE engine.
The problem areas are:
1) I don't know if halo can support a massive, yet detailed map. E: Just saw you plan on changing bsps. That would work. 2) It would be hard to script "random" events as the player explores. 3) The workload would be enormous.
As far as persuading neutral characters to join you through a conversation, that wouldn't be too hard. I'm sure there's several scripters here capable of that. Personally, I wouldn't know how to make them follow you, but I do know how to make them jump in your vehicle. If you did this, I think it would be cool to have a mythos or some massive vehicle with a friendly crew. Edited by Noobyourmom on Jan 31, 2011 at 04:29 PM

Yeah, it would be fun, just very hard to make.
I don't have xfire. I don't know if I'll ever have time for modding again. I did script all of covert ops, and you can pm me if you have any questions.

I knew what you were thinking before I got past the first paragraph. You basically want to emulate Fallout in Halo. Oh, it's possible, but it would require a LOT of tagspace. I've thought on it myself and discovered an alternate idea to every BSP in one map: Create a cutscene showing you leaving a BSP by some means (walking, warthog, pelican, etc.) and then use the function "map_name X" in order to save on tagspace; the only problem with this workaround is that you'd have to download all the maps before playing. For the Republic.
