I have a box that I converted to an editable mesh and flipped and everything. I added my heightmap.jpg, and changed the strength to 1000, but no heightmap showed up??

make sure you put your heightmap file in the data/levels/your maps folder,
beside your models and bitmaps folder.

what do you mean? Are you just looking for something to help you in your modeling as far as learning tips and tricks of the different purposes of different tools? If you are looking for some basics of 3ds, I usually am willing to help people learn some techniques and how different tools work and what they affect.
As far as what you create with them, no one can teach that really except maybe learning architecture. Basically, it's study buildings, study real life things, or even study other games. It's impossible to learn to be an artist overnight, but if you are willing to do it, there are thousands of videos and pictures out there as well as tons of people who can help take you to a heightened level of creativity one small fraction at a time.

You have to select all the faces, and THEN apply the modifier.
