Just noticing that a lot of great maps are almost ruined by tutorial-like voice actors.
-ALWAYS use reverb, it's naturally occurring in life and is easy to use.
-When imitating radio transmissions, the static to start and stop the transmission is not enough. Use a high-pass filter (not to extreme though) and longer reverb times.
-Audiacy is a great free program, but there's ways to skillfully acquire (not to be confused with stealing, that's bad) much better software.
-If you have a crap mic, at least find a de-hisser VST (also, find an audio program that supports the use of VST's, that's vital)
-Speak with enthusiasm and confidence. You're in combat, not explaining how best to go about modeling a hallway.
I use MAGIX Samplitude, better then Audition and Cubase IMO. I've also got the AutoTune VST and HARMONY, along with hundreds of other cool effects. I bought a 200$ phantom power mic (you can seriously hear the difference) and can do a perfect imitation of the androids off of Portal (they're all autotuned.)
Anyone else with tips and tricks? Anyone else feel my pain?
Also, If anyone needs help with anything sound related (theme music, sound effects, programs, voice effects, ect...) send me a PM or post ITT.

The voice acting on halomaps could be a lot better, even though people here aren't professionals they can still have decent acting.
Lumoria's voice acting is the reason I play that map muted. =P Edited by d4rfnader on Jan 17, 2011 at 05:25 PM

Well, FOIL is a rather easy method that most people do naturally without even realizing it. Firsts, outsides, insides, lasts. Thus, (4x^2 + 3) * (x^2 + 5), 4x^2 and x^2 are "firsts", as they are the first terms in either binomial. Multiply those first, then the outsides, i.e. "4x^2" and "5", because they are the outermost terms. Then, do the insides, i.e. "3" and "x^2", as they are in the middle. Then you multiply the lasts, "3" and "5", because they are the last terms in their respective binomials. Applying the FOIL method on this instance of simple binomial multiplication, we get 4x^4 + 20x^2 + 3x^2 + 15, which simplifies to "4x^4 + 23x^2 + 15".

I agree that a lot of people on halomaps, and a lot of other sites for that matter, have rubbish voice acting skills.

Quote: --- Original message by: TM_L0d3man It is indeed unfortunate that not all halomaps members are professional voice actors in every respect, nothing less should ever be expected. Now where did I leave my 200$ mic... You don't have to be professional in every way, I'm far from it as well. Just thought I'd share in hopes to at least help one person somewhere. Isn't that what these forums are about? Quote: --- Original message by: CLS_GRUNT Cool, someone who knows the term VST on these forums besides me. They're epically useful. I learned math in French, there was a different abbreviation for it.
