Why does everybody like the giant maps like Extinction, Hugeass, and Coldsnap so much. Yes, they're good maps, good looking, cool stuff, but the gameplay doesn't seem all that great. For example, it's so hard to kill anything, and you spend most of your times flying to find an enemy, or flying around in circles trying to blow up that guy in the jet. Why doesn't anybody play the small, cool, close-quarters maps? (Well I mean people do, but everybody seems really focused on the giant maps).

Yeah, the players and the community are different.

The players lke huge maps and Sphinxbio rip maps.
The community likes maps that actually have a quality standard.

The major irony about that is...
Those Mexicans and pirates still play my first map, Deserted. Lmfao.
Yes, that's right. They STILL play it, and that map is crap.

There's a difference between gameplay and fun, sphinxbio's maps are really fun, but have no gameplay. most of the "good" maps on this site have great gameplay, but they aren't fun at all.

I myself would rather have fun than good gameplay.

imo, maps are getting more and more generic; standard tagset with just a nice-looking bsp. More maps need interesting gimmicks (for lack of a better word) to spice up gameplay. Somthing out of the ordinary doesn't mean weird - it usually means epic.

Lol. Just read all this stuff. I really have to say, big maps. Blegh! Only good ones are some of the RPG but that is simply for the RPG gametype. I mostly like small maps because funForMe = fast-n-crazy maps where you can have instances where you can be going all crazy and somehow someone just pops out of nowhere from one of the three accesses to your area and goes "SURPRISE! BLAM!!!" when you are off guard or start losing teammates around you.

I have recently now decided in the last couple weeks I want to start making smaller more tactical maps. These close quarters maps with areas that can be defended yet taken if you are not on your guard (example being longest) are what is fun at least to me. That's why I am making generator_facility. Though it has been done before (as has EVERYTHING), I really hope to see interest in it because I personally know a few people who love these kinds of fast paced, fun maps.

What aggravates me about big maps:
Big maps = take 5 minutes to find someone then BOOM I just got sniped from a cliff somewhere within a five square mile span with explosive rounds with a explosion radius of a pelican and lord knows they are just scanning all 3 of the teleporters to tele-kill every soul that comes out even though some of the jerks occasionally betray on accident because they have no filter on their noobery and would shoot at a snowflake if it was near the teleporter. Ya-effin-hoo!
Too many people's stance on these maps:
Well I guess I will quit now and get in a server by myself because all I want to do is play with the vehicles and weapons anyway. I have been destroyed too much by people who either bot, telecamp, or explosivespam my spawn area so now I will lie to myself until it becomes truth that I like playing Halo alone on maps with a bajillion modded vehicles on them.

Yeah I agree. Small and medium maps are much more fun. Even Portent, to me, is still too big to play a healthy game on.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Nobody plays the actual fun maps, I would much rather play on CMT MPG3 Ruins than spend five minutes flying Coldsnap.

Isn't the community the complete opposite?
Consider:
"Gaysnap"
"Hugefail"

I don't think anyone here likes those maps at all.
Now the players on the other hand...

Is it normal for a regular mapper to say "I'd rather play a box map than Extinction."?

Say whatever you like.

Extinction, and Coldsnap remain the most played and downloaded custom maps, 4 years running.

Tiamat and I, we know what players like. The maps have their issues but they remain fun. Halo is a tired old game and these large maps are a different style of gameplay.

We do not dislike regular sized or small maps and both Tiamat and myself have created small maps and I have a massive library of some of the greatest maps ever to come to this game. They are art, maps like Siege and Portent. But the average player wants gimmicks on a ten year old game, not just artwork that they can't ever fully appreciate.

But thanks its always fun when I see a thread dedicated to discussing how much you all dislike the maps that keep people playing this game you all love so much.

I often find one sever with 2 people on it. That makes it one of the most played maps that arent defult or hugeass or coldsnap.

These maps would have been ok if the player limit wasn't 16. As it is, it takes about 5 minutes to find someone on Coldsnap or Hugeass, extinction is only slightly better.

Yeah, I mean, the vehicles are great, but the gameplay isn't smooth at all. The vehicles don't seem to make a good match. Jets vs Scarab. Nobody wins, why well, the scarab can't hit the jets and the jets can't do any damage to the scarab. Well, let's just circle around the scarab and maybe a longsword will come and drop a nuke on the scarab and then all 3 of use will die yay!! This is basically how the gameplay of those maps goes. Not very exciting.

Or you can use an OP pelican to kill anything.
Then there's just people flying seraphs and longswords into the hangar and wiping the place clean of players.

A Longsword run in those maps is usually suicide. Why? Well to actually get a kill (by hitting them with the nuke) you need to get right above them, and close enough so they can't move away in time, which logically means you have to get close, and of course that means you are as dead as your prey.

people like huge maps because they're different from your typical style of halo gameplay

one thing this community seems to think is tiny maps designed in your stereotypical U shape with two bases and some passages between will be a hit. no, it won't. it's been done repeatedly, it's been beaten into the ground.

if they wanted something that'll be a hit, they'd come up with something new and exciting that hasn't been done before and not the same recycled ideas over and over. hyrulefield, yoyorast, coldsnap, hugeass, no remorse, most of JahRain's maps, they're all different from your generic Halo experience, which is likely why they're played so much

the only way u can survive a suicidal longsword atomic bombing run is by having a passenger in the longsword that way if u r in the nukes blast radius the passenger is the only one that dies. Not the pilot.

Also i didn't like the guns on extinction. Once i killed a fully shielded guy in a jet in a few shots and he got really pissed. Or maybe thats because i rubbed it in a bit. But yeah, the weapons and gameplay were terrible

hey c'mon, i had pitfall on my server for months, we all played it every Sunday :P

If there's one criticism I have it's that bases need at least 2, preferably 3, entry points, otherwise it's impossible to get the flag. Your map was great for slayer tho Mooseman.

I'm also not really keen on the big maps like Hugeass, Extinction and Coldsnap for the simple reason that I like detailed and interesting environments, cold snap is just a big ice wasteland (sorry DA Ender). However, it is fun to use all the unique vehicles.
I do however love the map 'Downflow' I like the environment and I think it's great for gameplay and it's fun for CTF and slayer as long as you have a full 16 player server. The wraith is perfect, it has invis and excellent shooting range, the plasma missile doesn't just flop in front of you, it actually catapaults and I especially like the pelican how it can drop rocket launchers.

I'm very much looking forward to DA Enders' trinity map pack, I think they're gonna be awesome for gameplay and for fun. BTW got an ETA for those DA Ender?

Coldsnap was interesting at first to me, as some have said, it was different from the other maps. There were cool vehicles, powerful guns and it was basically a noobs paradise. But as I became more interested in this community, I tried other maps and found that coldsnap wasnt as much fun as others. I still played it occasionally, but I stopped bothering to after bots started to make a large appearance. It just sucked when the second that you left the base you were killed instantly by someone on the other side of the map.

These days I prefer smaller maps. I like them to be large enough to snipe well in, but also small enough for the classic ar run. For this reason I like maps like sidewinder.

I also like to look at the detail of the maps people make, just to see how they did it. So I can try and implement it into one of the ones I make. Even the smallest of details in some maps make the biggest difference. I had one map that was near impossible to win in if someone got the sniper rifle first. I then decided to take it out and the map became one of the better ones Ive made.

Kinda lost where I was gonig with this, but hey! At least you know something new about me!

generic tagsets/modded generic tagsets are boring.
I play extinction/coldsnap because of the uniqueness. not ideal for pro gameplay, so much FUNNER for recreation.

Big maps are good for people who think sniping is everything and shows you are pro sh**(WRONG), small maps are good for people who utilize everything in a map like it's makers intended it to be, and medium maps are good for people who like good gameplay all around and use all the weapons the game has to offer, and SUPERSIZE maps are good for people who have fun noobing or RPing

FTFY

While I will occasionally RP (very occasionally) I really don't understand why people don't RP in the video games that are... well... you know... MADE for RP
This game was sort of made for the NYAAA!!! I AM THE GOVERNATOR!!! DIE NAO!!! *BLAM BLAM BLAM* type of gamestyle.

CE needs more CQB maps, large and super-large maps are getting all the attention, while the smaller, more fun maps are being left in the dark. Sure, I can understand the need to be (slightly) nooby and snipe/laser someone from across the map, but where's the fun in that?

CQB is where it's at now, and I, personally, want to see/make/mod more maps like that. Take my b40-arena-v2 map, not even 100 dl's, but the people I've played against like the fact that you can simply pop out of nowhere and kill your enemy. Sure, it gets frustrating, but it's fun! There are sniper rifles, but in such a close map, you actually have to utilize the space around you and avoid being hit by your own bullet!

Simply put, large maps like Coldsnap, Hugeass and Exctinction are getting a little old. Someone should put up a dedicated server with all of the CQB maps and see what happens.
