Hello,
I am new here(as you can see) and don't know a thing about map making. I have all the programs(Halo CE, Gmax, Hek). I have also looked at an TON of tutorials but none of them seem to make any sense. Is there a certain tutorial I should be watching? Any tutorial suggestions are helpful. Thanks!

Here's a tip , don't sign off after posting , it makes you look like a douchebag.
As for map making , what form do you intend to adopt? Modelling , Animating , Textures?
You should probably experiment with some of them. Try and download a model , then play around with it and see what you like best.

Try messing around with the programs; it'll help understand certain functions and tools. Pause the tutorials videos or go back and watch the part over until you see what they are doing.

I guess I'm interested in modelling. I have figured out how to make basic stuff in gmax(Like a box with a hill in it). However after that I am clueless how to texture it and make halo play it.
Another thing I would like to know is just how to mod a multiplayer map that already exists. Like adding an extra rock to bloodgultch. Thanks for the help.

Rocks you can do in sapien, guy.
For making a map, use Yayap's tutorial. PDF document, I think.

I have tried opening sapien but there is nothing to open. First I go to the bloodgultch file then I open up the bitmap file and there is nothing in it. Same with the models file, nothing in it. I don't know where to find the file.

Yeah its Yayap's tut. It is in .PDF format. To texture basically press ''M'' also if you can find 3ds MAX 5 or 3ds MAX 8 tuts they also should work.

Or if people treat you like an idiot because you use a sig then just figure it out via trial and error. That is how I figured out almost all I know about GMAX and 3ds MAX.

And I don't see how using sigs makes you look like an idiot.

Maybe you're an idiot. Ever thought of that? Dennis uses sigs some.

Don't just focus on "Halo" mapping tutorials, other modeling tutorials are very great. The famous Beretta 9000 tutorial helps a lot of people. I don't know if it works with gmax though.
Just look around for beginner tutorials, and you should become something in no time. Also don't just focus on modeling... We need texture people...

I don't even know to where to begin with making textures and Yayap's tutorial doesn't even mention it. I haven't found any videos on youtube on making textures either. The most I know how to do is make a basic map with textures that are already there. I don't even know how to export the map out of gmax.

To export maps from gmax, use chimp to export the map.

Here is the download:
http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=1147

Click the hammer icon on the right panel. then click 'Maxscript', it''ll be the last one. The rest of the instructions are on the link page i gave you for the download.

Just read the yayap tutorial. You don't have to MAKE the bitmaps and everything. The original maps have them.
And you have t extract a scenario. Sapien opens scenarios.

Ok, well when I use chimp and try extract it it tells me I need a frame. I have no clue what a frame is or how to make one. Also when I try to texture the texture doesn't show up after I hit the apply button. The map just changes color and no texture is applied. And one finial question I am interested in making single player maps also but yayap's tutorial doesn't mention how to make one is there any difference e in making one. Thanks.

Basically make a box rename it to frame then lick the link button then click and drag from your map to the frame.

I can't really help you verbally with the textureing but what you do is you select your texture and click ''show map in viewport'' or something like that. Then the texture will show up.

In making a SP or MP map that is done in sapien.

Read the YAYAP tutorial. It explains all this in easy steps!

dude after you have made you map, click on create new then click on box.create the box right beside your map, name your new box as frame.then go to the top of your gmax or 3ds max programe and click on the select and link icon.now left click on your map...you will see a line...now move your mouse icon over to your new box and left click.job done (map linked to your frame).also problems with your texture...okay so when you add your texture it won't show up until you go to your modifier list and scroll down to uvw map.now when you select the uvw map your textures should appear on your map.you asked about making singleplayer maps,i think first of all you need to get to grips with the basics first, cause singleplayer maps have alot more work involved.goodluck.any other problems?

Yes just one when I try to tun radiosity in sapien it give me an error saying:
radiosity error: degenerate triangle [or triangle with bad uvs] (see blue in error geometry)
It doesn't mention in yayap's tutorial about this error other then that I got everything else to work. Thanks

you just need to do what maniac says in his post here in this link.you will see the wrl file in your halo custom edition programe folder, might be near the bottom.maybe post an image of your map to see if theres anything strange.but anyway importing the wrl file should sort it out.

Well, I was able to find the debug.wrl file. However when the open dialog box appears the wrl file is not there. I tryed both import options(Import recordings, Import sound scenery) So in short I have no clue how to import it. Thanks
