I was just uploading a map onto hce.halomaps using the java option thing and it showed the directory of my computer. Is it possible, that Dennis or anyone who has such privlages (spelling error), to hack into my computer, wreck my computer and put a virus onto it. Because I upload things to other communities and sites and I always think of this. But I was just too lazy to start a thread on the others (too hard and complex, not really, just lazy)
BTW, no offense Dennis. And you rock! The only moderator here and working on all of the forums, making all of the maps ready for download and generally always being here. Good job. If I wasn't a guy, I'd love you. Lol

No, you can't be hacked by it. It only lists the directory of the PC using the application, not someone elses.

If he has a java-driveby hack installed, he could. But I think he is civilized enough, not to do that to all 100,000s of daily users.

The Java Applet does not send anything to the server it is just an FTP client that runs in your web browser.

What would happen if someone uploaded a map with a virus or some sort of malware along with it?

Our anti-virus server quarantines it when I attempt to move it to our inbound file area. Unfortunately It happens on a semi-regular basis.

Then once it reaches the quarantine zone, Dennis fire's his laser upon the file. You know what happens from there.

Well, some unfortunate victim would download the file, then they would have a virus on their computer, and their computer would crash.

Also, this whole website would probably crash too, unless of course there are back-up servers.

It is a valid question and concern and one I am keenly aware of. We utilize corporate anti-virus products on all our servers and PC's with an update server that checks every 6 hours for updates. There is no concern with *.map file being "infected" since they are a data files and can not run a virus by themselves and even if one was appended to the file the game would not run the file since the checksum would be off.

Many may have noticed that it takes longer for utilities to be placed on line than it does for maps. That is becasue we test utilities on a sandbox Virtural PC specifically established for that purpose to verify it does not contain malware.

Some complain about the time it takes to place things on line and have asked to be able to do it themselves but the reason we don't allow untested uploads it becasue we are concerned with your safety.

So how could Dennis miss some of those viruses coming through the sever and manage to ward off majority of them?
There are no virus infected files on our website. None. Live files are scanned everytime we receive new virus signatures.

If your system got infected with something then it came from somewhere else.

And what if the signature was brand new?

If the signature is brand new then logic dictates that the virus is also an not in an old archive. Besides 99% of the files on the site are *.map files which CANNOT contain malware because they are data files and would be corrupted. If by some slim and totally unbelievable chance an existing archve was found to have something the anti-virus software would quarantine it and and notify me.

Look I have gone to great precautions to prevent hosting any virus infected files so much so that I am confident of the files we host. If for any reason you feel unconfortable with our process then don't download any files.
