The forerunners didn't want to conquer the galaxy. They already had control over it. The FLOOD wanted to conquer it. That was 100 thousand years ago. Back then, the humans weren't very intelligent yet, and we don't know where the Covenant was. Right before the Halos were activated, the Forerunners saved several species, including humans. That's how come the humans and Covenant weren't wiped out.

Because they had 5 million ships led by Medicant Bias on their doorstep. And had a defensive fleet of 11,000, which prevailed. But only due to the Ark activating did the fleet led by Offensive Bias ( The one with 11,000) prevail.

The Flood are an extra-galactic alien race that infects other sentient races to live, they use their hosts to move around and subsequently get more hosts by attacking other species.
They invaded the Galaxy 100,000 yeas ago and got into a thousand year long war with the Forerunners who fought in a long stalemate for many years. The Flood created a Gravemind, an intelligent Flood form to lead them and they attacked the main Forerunner worlds.
The Forerunners, after exhausting every other option opted to commit mass suicide on themselves and to kill every organism with enough mass to sustain the Flood and so they activated weapons of mass destruction (Halos). However they'd forgotten that they'd left Flood in stasis on some of them, like leaving the gas on.

If they'd of completely conquered the Galaxy, they'd just move on to another. It is implied that they probably control other Galaxies completely but failed to conquer the Milky Way because of the humans and the Covenant.
Bold is false. The war was approximately 343 years long.

So, about the precursors...What happened to them?

By the way, its Humans+Shangheili versus the Covenant vs the Flood, right? How about other races?I remember seeing stuff about Space Jockeys or something...What's that?

ehm let's put this simple:

according to books and whatever i've consumed, the forerunners kept the flood to studie them.

however, since the forerunners are gone for whatever reason, the flood broke loose since the covenant is so stupid to believe it was a playboy mansion and opened the quarantine they were in.

there was NO other form than infection forms, they gain shape and size depending on what host they consume.

sentient life, is all life with intelligence, they need intelligence to survive, they're dumbasses originally, they gain your intelligence to do what they do, and if they need MORE intelligence, they make (proto-)graveminds

altogether, it's simply some biochemical experiment of the forerunners to make infection forms in a safe controlled enviroment.

some people are stupid and don't see that, like the covenant in this case, it's all their fault D=

to start usualy, an infection form dig in a guest lifeform removing enought flesh to get inside of it and takeing controll of the body. after the guest body rapidly start to dna-change and bags of FLOOD spore appears on the body.

i think that the spore are able to create infection forms when they fall near a font of calcium like bones.

also flood don't eat people they tear apart them consuming the calcium of theyr bones.

Flood infection:

An infection form burrows into the chest cavity of a target host, pushing the vital organs out of the way to make room for itself. After it's gotten "comfortable", it taps into the central nervous system via the hosts's spinal cord, and releases spores throughout the body. These spores then integrate themselves into the hosts's DNA, altering it. This causes rapid mutation of the host's body. It then uses a similar process to wildly accelerate the growth of its tentacles, which it extends throughout the host's body, pushing bones out of the way (usually breaking them), and manipulating the host's limbs and extremeties. This is the reason for combat forms' somewhat lopsided movement. Some of the tentacles usually break out through one of the host's arms, and are used like a whip to attack enemies.
Yes I know I'm a nerd.

The host's consciousness is usually suppressed by the flood infection form. Only in one case has the host maintained limited control over his body, aka Pvt. Wallace A. Jenkins.

I always thought the host would maintian his/her counciousness but the Flood's instincts would take over the body. While remembering who his friends were, the host wouldn't be able to stop himself from killing them...Dark yeah!

He was captured by the UNSC, and during the Marines' escape from Halo, they commandeered the Truth and Reconciliation. However, the ship was still infected, but the Major in charge wouldn't abort takeoff. Jenkins realized the threat the Flood could pose if they got off the ring, so he tried to destroy the ship, but was stopped by the Marines guarding him. Then, Lieutenant McKay realized what he meant, and destroyed the ship, killing all Marines aboard. That's why barely any survived the destruction of Halo.

The ship wasn't very far from the surface of Halo. I'm still curious as to why it didn't destroy the ring.

The same reason as to why the asteroid that hit our planet 65 million years ago didn't destroy Earth. The mass of the Earth is much greater than the mass of the asteroid. Let's put this back into perspective with Halo. Halo is like, huge, compared to a Covenant cruiser. Remember Halo 2? High Charity dwarfed all the cruisers. Later, you could see that Halo was about 4 times bigger than High Charity. That's like saying that you don't know why you don't die when an ant falls on your toe.

Fusion engines. Nuclear fusion has enough energy to do a lot of damage. Our sun provides us light and heat through nuclear fusion every day.

So because the Covenant ship didn't have fusion engines, it couldn't have destroyed the ring?

Fail. Miranda Keyes tells you to overload the crashed Flood ship's engine core to destroy Voi, after an infected Covenant ship crashes on earth in Halo 3.

The thing crashed down, not exploded. And Voi and other parts of Africa were glassed. Did Earth explode? No it didn't.
