there are 3 types of gfx cards: AGP, PCI and PCIe, you have to check which one you need, just look into the casing what the length of the lane is.
as for RAM, it's usually DDR2 or DDR3 nowadays, depends on your computer.

Go to the computer manufacturer's website. For example, I went to Dell, and searched up "XPS M1530". It had a list of components that I could use to upgrade my computer somewhere. I don't exactly remember how to get to that list, but it's there somewhere.

you could also go to run and search for DXDIAG it will tell you what type of GFX you have thens earch for the card type and you should find out waht type of card you need.
for vista you just go to start and search DXDIAG
if you want to know what kind of RAM you need go to crucial.com and test your computer.

hmm maybe you can ask your local friendly technician to help you upgrade your stuff?
may cost money (if the guy is someone you don't know, and you are not his GREAT friend) but that beats having to buy a new comp after screwing up yr motherboard when you try to force an incompatible card into the wrong socket. motherboards are expensive.

You can. I had to take my XPS M1530 apart once when the RAM got corrupted. Had to take it out, and get a new one. When I was looking for new ones, I saw that instead of having 2 1 GB memory cards, I could have 2 2 GB memory cards, which gives me 4 GB of RAM. But I didn't get them, and instead got the free replacement that Dell gave me.
