You dont really need to script it like that for SP. But for MP, it uses a biped crushing script. Where it checks if the biped is dead, or alive.

So, basicly it runs most of its animation once you get inside, such as closing doors, going up, and opeing doors, but it starts and stops that based on where the player(s) are or if they press buttons.
There are scripts to stop animations of scenery and start them at specific timeframes. I would use those. But also make sure not to reset the elivator if someone presses the button at the bottom and someone else is riding it up. then they would fall out.
Also, you can download all the sp scripts from halomaps. Search it.
