Even if you have a good graphics card, good games like Crysis won't run, because the memory as well as processor speed is limited. On a supercomputer like the 6 TB one, it's no problem. You really should get a new machine.

On a supercomputer like the 6 TB one, it's no problem. You really should get a new machine. Crysis is a game based on your gfx card, the cpu doesn't contribute much to the FPS of crysis, on a underclocked dual core cpu of 1,80 ghz compared to an overclocked one of 3,2 ghz dual core, you get a difference of 5 fps. For sure, halo can't be compared to crysis, not just because of the huge difference in engine and the fact that crysis is one helluva jaw dropping game, but because halo requires more cpu than gfx compared to crysis when you compare them seperatly. Also, the HD space doesn't mean anything, except that your wallet is big the virtual memory on your pc is way too slow to act as real ram, so it's used as last resort. the ram is great, if you have 8 gb of ram you can reserve a portion of it to save the game on, and really, it sure speeds it up as it is in the ram and it writes to the ram, there are programs to use flash usb drives as ram, wich is very effective, especially since USB 3.0 is coming up. most people don't have the ammount of ram to save some HD space on, so forget that and just use lowest timing settings possible to overclock your ram. Athlon cpu's are the best. you don't have a multiplier lock so you can overclock them to whatever speed you need, untill you run out of power or fry it. My athlon x2 5000+ has a standard clock speed of 2,6 ghz, and i could easily overclock it to 3.2 ghz (non black edition =D ) but i do need some additional cooling when running at top speed. so, you should get into overclocking your machine if you don't have the money to buy some better hardware, and atleast get windows XP Quote: --- Original message by: Newbkilla Mines top for it's processor.

There are hardly any programs that support quadcore, you're fine with dual core for the moment. lol laptops are not meant for gaming
and yes, there are risks when you OC something, but if you do so then you either didn't keep an eye on the temperature or just put the switch on max settings without looking... seriously, you guys think it will burn instantly? then you really need to do more research.
a little googling came up with the core speed of the geforce 5200 fx, wich is 250 mhz, wich i trust can handle 300 without additional cooling. we're talking about ancient cards here, not top notch geforce 9800 GT OC's that came with passive cooling...

But it works fine for halo so i got no complaints I can run F.E.A.R with barley any lag at all though Yea FEAR has a few options that can drastically improve the FPS of the game, did you know, FEAR got a halo mod too? it's called the bas tard mod, you can google it up but halo 1 requires a video card with 32 mb Vram and it just has to support T&L, the old matrox cards on the pentium 2 systems won't run it, but anything higher than that, that means everything that you can still buy in a shop, can run that, I don't really see any problems here other than you need a very small budget to play halo 1 decently. Halo 2 on the other hand, requires a tad more than the average onboard gfx card to run it smooth, but there's another forum section for that

Vista FTL, only people who don't know a thing about computers get attracted by the cute round buttons and fancy stuff that slows the computer down. It's not the user friendlyness, it's designed to be easier, except for tweakers, but it's the performance wich is a huge cost you know, microsoft extended XP a few more years for a very good reason, even Office 14, the newest office, gets support for windows XP. there are ALOT of reasons, but if you want to know everything i suggest doing research and look at the benefits of XP/Vista There is also a hack for windows XP to run DirectX 10, wich i use, so that one doesn't count would you mention it =P Quote: --- Original message by: Recycle Bin How the hell is that even possible to have 26gigs of RAM? You even stated in the 1st post you have 1 gig of ram. Mobo's have up to 6 slots, the BIOS is usually the limit, not the slots, as the BIOS can handle up to 16 gb of ram, it can't 'read' more. Some computers can read up to 4 gb, just depends on the BIOS. It also depends on if he includes the ammount of virtual ram with it, wich you shouldn't consider as real usefull ram, but then it can go up to infinite. maybe VR would get usefull when we all buy a Raptor harddrive, wich is atm the fastest harddrive available The hard disk uses files as quickly as possible, and it 'fragments' because it doesn't put it back as it should, it just wants to be fast. that's why we defragment files, the one included in windows is a free version of a good app wich microsoft couldn't affort, so look up auslogics defragment app as it's way better, even the free version, as it's more updated Edited by BeachParty clan on Mar 13, 2009 at 11:22 AM

LOL. You won't burn up your pc by over clocking it.. Only if you abuse it. I over clocked mine. Like I said earlier, mines a 3.07 gig. Was 2.7 or something. You need to know your pc's limits. I used Clockgen. Just google it if you want to find out more.

Dang lol man you guys are all lucky. All i have is a 2.4 Celeron a 32 meg NVIdia TNT2 RIVA (but i will be getting a 128 meg video card soon though) and 768 megs of DDR RAM but i can go up to two gigs of DDR DIMM RAM though. Also im running Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 6 the final release will be out April 23rd. If you overclock your CPU all you need is a very good fan. You should also have at least ONE fan blowing IN and EVERY OTHER FAN blowing out of your case.

The end. you forgot bioshock... except that is for pc too as far as vista vs xp, i found that with xp i had alot more issues than i have with vista. granted that my laptop with vista on it is overall at least 4 times better than my old laptop with xp, and i know how to take better care of my computer now. i can get vista to the point where it only takes around 640 mb of ram. i realize that xp only takes around 300, but it has never been an issue for me. same with compatibility. the ONLY thing that hasnt been compatible between xp and vista for me is an old TV tuner card, and the issue is that it doesnt fit in the port on my new laptop, not the OS. E: on the topic of cooling systems, i have a friend who just custom built a desktop, and put all of the components except for the hard drive and the cd drive in a fish tank full of mineral oil. apparently mineral oil does not conduct electricity, and it keeps the components very cool. I can CoD: WaW with all settings on high and still get 30 FPS, so I figure mine must be reasonably good. Do you happen to have Vsync on? if so, you could get a higher fps, CoD 5 is sorta intensive, still, if you want a good benchmark, Crysis with the HD mod is THE game lol. But yea your computer is good. And no, Fans and cooling isn't the solution to overclocking stability. sure, it will cool it, but you still have to consider the voltage core and multiplier locks etc. Athlon is the best brand for OC'ing. And Intel, jeez, even IF you can overclock it, only the FSB can be adjusted a little... Pentium 4 has to be taken as it is, 'round 3 ghz dual core is fine, you don't even have to ask here if your computer can run halo or whatever, almost everything can run halo 1. Yes oil is a nice way to cool it down, it works, but I'd rather not dip my hardware in a can of oil no matter how well it works. Watercooling is also expensive, the little metal pieces that come in time wear it down, aswell as liquid nitrogen, wich you have to replace/add whatever in time, it's fun but not really a good idea for the long term use. So i'll stick to leaving my sidepanel open and alot of fans wich my PSU has handle =P Overclocking from this to that doesn't say that much, difference will always be bigger or smaller for some CPU's, so it doesn't matter. Mine was 2.6 ghz original, and OC'd 3.2 ghz, difference? 600 mhz, does it matter? nah, it's about the final speed outcome you get, and the games you can play with it, and perhaps the movie render time, but nothing much. The speed difference doesn't have any impact on the result, so it doesn't matter. Same for temperature difference, when you overclock, sure, it will raise dramatically, but you must NOT let that fool you, make a quick check on the max temperature of your hardware, and be suprised. my original clock speed had a temp of 10 degrees celcius, now, overclocked and under stress, it's 65 degrees celcius. reason to panic? not really, it burns at 70 degrees. So, people who believe overclocking your cpu will fry it like *snap*, you don't have to believe that, do some research yourself and be amazed, there is a reason why alot of people make it their hobby as there is alot to learn and there is so much hardware to check out, with knowledge comes fun here, aswell as some profit since OC'ing your cpu can often make a difference in chosing the expensive CPU or the less expensive one and be able to buy something else with it =) It's not simple, I'm not saying that, but it's worth it to do some research when you have the time for it. And consoles, great god, don't start about that, they are GAMING consoles, ofcourse they're good, otherwise consoles wouldn't make it on the market.... Yes, 8 PS3's linked together equals a NASA computer but with less energy consumption, there was a news article about a doc that traded his nasa comp for 8 ps3's as it greatly reduced the costs of the energy, but heck, we're not here to link them up to calculate the age of the universe, we're just here to game There are differences, there always will be, a PS3 got blue ray wich can store MGS4 wich is 50 gb, those things are coming to the pc too, and in time remove the line of difference. a ps3 can be hooked up with a keyboard i hear, well it's coming closer to the PC, that's great right? there are even cross-platform games like shadowrun so that you can play on the PC against xbox players, another breakthrough. There always will be a difference and there will always be a development to make the difference smaller again since everything wants to develop. If you're a fan of a console, that's fine, but I don't like controllers so I'll just stick to the PC. The Wii got a higher FPS? oh, good for you, I'll just buy the PC version. Oh, no halo 3 for PC? I'll just mod halo 1 to look like halo 3 or just grab another game rather than spending alot of money for a few games that aren't on my platform of preference. Last thing, Vista is a great platform, because it's new ofcourse, heck, I'll skip that and use windows 7 beta! But performance is still a problem, we're not using NASA computers and that's the main reason XP lives on, our budget isn't limitless, and that's what I'm basing my opinion on. We're OC'ing for performance, so that we don't have to buy faster and more expensive CPU's because of our budget, so most OC'ers will say Vista is stupid, as it just stomps most performance in the ground for fancy transparent menu bars and some side bar with a fancy clock, but that's my opinion based on what I do, OC for performance. People who don't really go for pro gaming, don't mind it and will go for Vista, wich isn't wrong either. Ps: if someone quotes my post I'm gonna lol. Yes, 8 PS3's linked together equals a NASA computer but with less energy consumption, there was a news article about a doc that traded his nasa comp for 8 ps3's as it greatly reduced the costs of the energy, but heck, we're not here to link them up to calculate the age of the universe, we're just here to game Edited by BeachParty clan on Mar 16, 2009 at 06:23 AM I stopped reading after this.
