I want to create a ground texture for a desert. The sand is going to be almost white. How do I do this? there will be a road going through the center of the level. how do I make it slightly whiter around the road? can I use my own textures?

Yes you can use your own textures. Get photoshop and learn to paint textures. Theres several texutring tutorials on the net just not for ground texturing. Learn the tools for photoshop before painting the ground texture. Then you will understand how to do it.

Also for grounds you will probly want to be using a alpha channel in the tiff, this controls the blend between the primary and secondary detail maps.
