I tried opening up a halo 2 map with HEK+ and I got weird symboys and other weird crap |

Well, there is entity. You can export the tags and whatnot manually, and not in a single clump like in the HEK. If you go here: http://files.xboxsoftmods.org/index.php?act=category&id=5 You can easily find halo 2 maps already exported.

There is a halo 2 bsp extractor on this site. But it doesn't work it just sits there and does nothing

I'm sure you can look at what's in the map but I don't think you can actually extract them.
