So i've decided to make a tutorial for how to play halo ce on Linux. It works great, 100% of the time! There are 2 different programs i recommend. Cedega(costs but is the best) http://www.transgaming.com/products/cedega/ , And WINE(Free, works..) http://www.winehq.org/ .

First thing you need to do is obviously have a computer with Linux on it. There would be no point on following this tutorial otherwise..

To get started go ahead and download WINE from WINEHQ(http://www.winehq.org/). If you have Linux, all you have to do is click here.

Once you have that installed, go ahead and download this. http://www.wmclan.net/mfc42.dll , next go to "Applications\Wine\Browse C" Then click on Windows\System32\ and place it in there.

When your done with that, go ahead and download Halo CE. http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=410 Make sure that you hit save, and not open.

Next, Go to your desktop(or wherever you downloaded it to) and right click on your file.

Click on "Open". It may also say something along the lines of "Open with WINE".

When prompted, read through the license agreement and hit Agree.

Follow the dialogs to install the game.

Now that that is finished, you are going to need to download the latest EXE's, The updater doesn't work the way it should. Download http://wmclan.net/halolinux/HaloCELinux.zip and unzip the content to "/home/YourName/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Halo Custom Edition"
IMPORTANT!!
YOU MUST CHANGE THE REGISTRY VALUE FOR YOUR CURRENT VERSION!!!!! IT WILL KEEP SAYING THERE IS UPDATES!!!!
http://wmclan.net/halolinux/ingame/]http://wmclan.net/halolinux/ingame/REGEDIT.png

Go to your desktop, or to Applications\Wine\Programs To load up halo. When changing your visual settings, alt tab to get back into the game, If you don't it looks like it freezes.

Can i haz rep? NO SCREENSHOTS OR GTFO!
Herz ya Screenshotz.
(goto http://wmclan.net/halolinux/ingame/ for all of the screenshots)

NOTE: The quality of the pics look horrible for some reason.. Possibly my mozilla, or halomaps is resizing them or something... Right click view image to see high quality.

UPDATE: JUST GOT TEXT TO WORK IN GAME!!
To get text to work, open up terminal and run this command..

msiexec /i '/home/e3po/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Halo Custom Edition/redist/msxmlenu.msi'
make sure you change it to your correct directory.

Yeah, E3pO gets all the credit though, I just quoted what he said before Dennis deleted his post. lol

It doesn't work for me right now for some reason though, whenever I get to the main menu it's all screwed up and I can't see anything but black and messed up textures. Idk how to fix it right now, but hopefully E3pO will msg me back and say what needs to be done to fix the error, and i'll put it up here.

no all you probably need to do is run halo CE at a high res like 1024x768 and have ubuntu run at 800x600 that should work

If you guys are native Linux Ubuntu users, you would understand this.

Quote: Running Windows Programs in Ubuntu is pointless. Why? Because its not Windows. Not only does it not have the specific files to run them, which requires you to emulate them, but Windows has things Ubuntu doesn't have. For example, WINDOWS.

Windows games are meant for Windows. Emulating them is pointless, not only because they are VERY buggy, but because of the fact that Ubuntu does not recognize most Direct X Features. Ubuntu has its own unique system.

And I see you have yet to make a contribution to this thread. Great job derailing something over your stupidity on a track of trying to get noticed.

Maybe people want to play Halo right now, instead of waiting for it to come out on Linux? Ever take the two seconds and think of that? I think not. So, either you post something constructive to this thread, or you leave it in piece.

I did post something constructive. I was saying why it doesn't work very well. I was practically warning you guys about the bugs. :|

Don't get me wrong, Ubuntu is a good OS, but I wouldn't prefer it for gaming IMO. You do what you want with it though. Don't listen to the person who has been using it since the 5th Build.

There is little to no bugs playing this, E3pO said it himself. If you follow the tutorial I quoted that he made above, it should work fine.

You got a Nvidia card or an ATI card?

I remember when I had Linux and due to having an ATI card the game was really messed up on Linux.

They have Plug-Ins on the Ubuntu Site for ATI and Nvidia Cards. You can also go into Add/Remove and add the ATI Plugin from there. If not there, then go into Synaptic Package Manager and look for the ATI plugin with the search.

Here is something you guys might want to know also, if this ever happens to you.

When running Games in WINE or Cedega. You will notice that after a while, the game will have strange text rendering. If this becomes a problem, you might want to search for the Font and add it into the "Fonts" folder in your Wine Directory. This makes it easier for Wine to render it and chat will work a lot easier.

For those who want to install Halo PC, you will need pidgen.dll to use the CD Key. It will process the CD Key, but it will say your missing a .dll

Just find where you would put it in your Wine directory.

Did you happen to take your pills today young sir?

Linux is better than windows for MANY reasons.

1- There are NO VIRUSES for linux yet.
2- Faster boot up, less shiz.
3- Microsoft has hidden apps watching you, (Linux doesn't)

I am tired of people hating other systems. Linux can do all the things windows can. Did I mention LINUX IS FREE? While windows makes you pay $200 for an operating system.

Linux has many advantages.

#1 - Running Servers is just like throwing a Hot Pocket into a Microwave.

#2 - The support for the System is amazing. I like the fact that I can go on the forums and I can get a reply instantly other then Microsoft saying "Try to restart your PC".

#3 - The Add/Remove feature is great. Especially if you don't feel like going on a website and clicking a thousand pages to get what you want.

DO NOT turn this thread into a debate over which operating system is better. Make that decision for yourself. I have allowed it becasue is is specifically about how to run Halo CE on Linux and NOT how good or bad Linux or Windows is.

Stay on the topic: "Halo Custom Edition on Ubuntu Linux"

Thanks for not reading the topic and obliviously trying to put your input when it isn't needed, nor wanted. THIS TOPIC IS TO DISCUSS THE RUNNING OF HALO CUSTOM EDITION ON LINUX, NOT WHAT SYSTEM IS BETTER WHEN YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AND HAVE NO TRUE PROOF THAT ONE IS BETTER THEN THE OTHER, YOUR OPINION DOES NOT MATTER ON THIS TOPIC'S DISCUSSION. Geez, get it in your heads people.

The point of the topic is getting Wine to properly Emulate Halo Custom Edition on Linux Ubuntu. Microsoft did not make a version of Halo to put on Ubuntu. Actually, someone should make a petition for Bungie to make a version that will work on Ubuntu (Without the Emulators of course) :D

Well lets see what comes out of this HCE in Ubuntu topic... I definitely wouldn't play it on Wine since it will just cause massive lag.

That all has to do with your PC. Not Wine. Everything that I have Emulated in Wine hasn't lagged what so ever.

Sir don't be such a fool, if I was a forum troll, wouldn't you think I be banned a long time ago? (notice date I signed up on this)

Now on to topic:
We want to make this HCE 100% compatible with Ubuntu (maybe not 100%) so other users can enjoy the playing experience on Ubuntu.
I don't really care anyways, in my case I got Windows and Ubuntu on the same PC (dualboot)

lol, you really think the date you signed up on the Forum really matters? I signed up on a lot of Forums and I was never active on Half of them. So what makes you think your account is any different? I have not seen one of your posts since I have been here. My first account here was "dotkito". Look that up.

And as of an hour ago, so do I. That still doesn't take from the fact of the users here that don't know what or how to Dual boot an Operating System.

Both of you need to stop fighting over stupid things, or take it to the PM's, because right now you're cluttering up my topic.
