Oh boy gmax can actually run on this ancient piece of crap!
*Downloads from turbosquid* (A version at fileplanet did the exact same thing as this.)

:O Gmax installer :O

:O Gmaxsetup .cab file :O

yes... yes.. its gonna inst...

...

...

...huh??? >_>

Now I know the little issue everyone was talking about when they said "it installs fraps"...
Here I was telling them "well you weren't supposed to download Fraps, now, where you? No. Download GMAX."
So, uh, I was wanting to put gmax onto this old computer, but since I FORGOT to back up gmax itself (I kept my level, just not the program for it), I decided I had to download it. I went to turbosquid where I got it the first time, ran it, oh goodie it's Fraps... I used Fraps once and got rid of that shameful program... craps...
So I went to google, searched some pages, decided to use a fileplanet link... turns out its the exact same thing. Craps installer... oh goodie.

So now I need to know what to do about it. I want gmax again. I'm not spending my life savings on 3DS.

Run the gmax12.exe program again and click "about". Does it say that it is licensed to Discreet?

What folder? All there ever was is a EXE. I decided to go all the way through the installer but it only installs Fraps.

Yes, it does say "Licensed to: Discreet"

I don't know. I don't care. I don't want Fraps. And I won't tell you whether it does or doesn't if I find out, because if it IS the full version, that would be piracy.

offtopic:
I use CamStudio 2.0 with Xfire's codec. I get no lag when using it. The video quality is Excellent. The size is compact for its excellent quality. I like it. I use it. I destroy copies of Fraps that come in contact with either of my computers.

ontopic: I still fail to see any options for me if I want to get GMax. No, I will not get 3DS, my life savings won't pay for it. Not even the student version (assuming I spend those savings on something I am REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY trying to get first, but then I still won't buy 3DSMax)

Have you received your Email from Discreet with your activation code?

They don't give activation codes. They haven't for awhile. Turbosquid gives working codes. I downloaded from turbosquid, as that is the only link I have ever seen in these forums for Gmax.

The version I used was downloaded from the exact same place. The only difference is that it was actually GMax, not Fraps.

Eh good point.

Anyway I find it odd that the download is for fraps... want me to try finding you a link?

EDIT: well heres a link i found (didn't try it so i duno if it's fraps or not) that should be gmax.

Now before you say something like "thats the link I used are you calling me stupid?" or something similar, no i'm not calling anyone stupid and i'm not accusing you of saying I or anyone called you stupid... but i've seen things get all out of whack cause someone gets offended because someone helped them.

You went here:
http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

And clicked the free download Icon for Gmax. I just did and got Gmax12.exe that installed just fine.

I tried both download links, same file. Didn't install Gmax. Had the above predicament AGAIN.

BTW Tygron, I'm not like that. I don't blame the person who posts the link, that's like shooting the messenger...
Then again, I do recall telling someone "DOWNLOAD THE ... THING AGAIN, THEN ... ...!" over xfire, and it actually worked... I don't know. He's someone I personally know, and my flaming him was an inside joke... don't ask.
I'll just download it again... and again... and again... hopefully I will get one that's not fraps... but I might consider recording it with camstudio... too bad I don't have xfire video codec.

It did this for my friend. He had installed Halo Zero, unistalled it and when he wanted Gmax it installed Halo zero. I think you should make sure that all the files are deleted from fraps like saved movies or anything.

They are. There is no trace of the program in my HD (well theoretically, nothing can be "removed" from a hard drive, but...), nor is it in my Add/Remove Programs list.

Advancebo, stfu, because you need to read the above posts. The same download that gives people gmax gives people FRAPS as well.

In fact, I googled "gmax installs FRAPS" and I got this:

Quote: From: http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p1047741.htm
I just downloaded gmax from TurboSquid to test.

http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

When I run the installer then gmax installer appears not FRAPS.

If you are sure that you are running the gmax installer then it’s possible that the FRAPS installer is being invoked by the MSI (Microsoft Installer). This can be due to FRAPS not having been installed cleanly or the MSI is mangled.

If you try and install another program that uses MSI like ShapeViewer does this install OK or does FRAPS appear as well. In most cases the FRAPS installer is looking for the *.msi file that come with the FRAPS installer. There is usually an option to browse to this file. If there is then find the FRAPS msi file the MSI is looking for and browse to it to allow the FRAPS installation to complete. If that does not fix the problem then you may have to uninstall FRAPS which may resolve.

If none of the above works then you will have to provide either detailed posts as to what the exact sequence of events and error messages are or screen shots of what’s occurring and I may or may not be able to assist you.

And:

Quote:
He he. I found this problem with the 3DSMax 5 TRS exporters... Seems that if the exporter finds the FRAPS installer in the same folder as the 3DSMax/GMax installer file, then it tries to install FRAPs instead... Try moving the installer file to somewhere such as the desktop to install from Smile

But there is a problem.
I don't have a fraps installer. At all.

-------

But I just now found a fix!
Maybe I do have a fraps installer somewhere, but I don't see it.
What I did to fix it was simple: I put the gmax installer into a folder all by itself. It works perfectly now.
I'd like this fix to be NOTED.

Delete the contents of your windows\temp flolder. The Gmax Zip installer is calling annother setup.exe program that exists in your \temp folder.

I would, if simply moving it to another folder didn't work. I already got it to install, as noted in my above post. -.-

And I do not have anything that installs FRAPS in my c:\windows\temp folder... my problem is solved, though.
