Im not entirely sure if you can update the game and still use that no-cd crack, although I think my friend somehow figured out how to, so it may be possible, but I kinda doubt it.

I thought no-cd's are illegal no matter how its used...

its ilegal if you didnt buy the game at all but i think its different if you bought the game and still have the box it came in with and the cd key

You can do whatever you want on your own computer. HOWEVER, you are not allowed to distribute any crack or modified executable of the game or program that modifies the game executable.

Purchase the Halo PC game:

I'd rather go without than take what you'd bring.

I prefer to look at it this way:
If you OWN THE GAME by purchasing or receiving it through legal means, then why not use a crack? It saves your precious CD from getting scratched. Or... if you LOST YOUR CD, this provides an alternative until you get a new one (I suggest a mini-image).

If you pirated the game, GTFO. :)

I won't tell you any links to where you can get a crack, but google is your friend. There is nothing illegal in referring someone to google and I take no responsibility in what you type in the search box.

I prefer to look at it this way:
How you look at it is immaterial to the copyright laws.

If you OWN THE GAME by purchasing or receiving it through legal means,
This is where most people get it wrong. You do not OWN software. You license the use of it. Which means that the licensee can revoke your rigth to use it and take it away. You do not own the game just the plastic and cardboard it came on.

then why not use a crack?
If you write it sure, but if you download or distribute the crack it is a violation of the copyright and the The end user license agreement. No matter how you feel about it, that is the law.

You can do whatever you want on your own computer.

That's how most people think and it's wrong. In Europe it is illegal to bypass ANY copyrighted protection no matter how you do it, where you do it.

Pretty sure that the American laws can't be that far off. Your statement is a common, logic, internet distributed assumption which is not correct, at least for Europe.
It all depends on the end user license agreement, and to be clear I only have knowledge of USA copyright laws as my law firm has explained them, but technically you are correct in that if the license prohibits modifying the code then it is a violation of the EULA which in the US is a civil matter, however privacy rights and local state laws supersede the EULA and can make portions of it unenforceable or null and void. (you will need to pay an attorney $175.00 an hour or more to determine which parts are null and void)

If you will excuse the figure of speech, In the USA, in essence what you do behind closed doors is your business but once you show it to someone it is the licensee’s business and legal action can be taken. There are so many shades of grey that there is no simple answer other than the fact that you are prohibited by the EULA and Copyright laws from distributing, therefore by extension downloading, a crack or hack of the game.
