its like what kind of file it is. for example .bmp (stands for ''bit map picture'') a .bmp can be opened with various art programs such as paint and photoshop. but in this case its max. a .max file is opened with 3ds max. a 3d modeling program. that download link you have there is a 3d model that will open with 3ds max.
