Question: what causes this? How do I fix this? I've been working on adding AI to maps for a little while, then decided to start delving into making my own. This is a map I made with a tutorial. It was not made with a heightmap. I was made with a box that had hills added (this would be geometricgeek's 45 min. tutorial). I ran lightmaps in tool. Correctly. Is there a list of common errors that cause this problem? I'd rather not have to consistently use a heightmap (which is the only way I've ever been able to get my map to show). I have added no weapons except in guerilla (starting weapons). I added the pistol and the AR. I added absolutely NO grenades. I tried it again after taking away the AR and ran lightmaps again but still the same result.

You messed up the sky material just like I did :-/. Did you add +sky where you put the diffuse color? If so, are you sure you did everything correctly? Edited by Pingvinz on Apr 24, 2008 at 10:15 AM

What I did (following the tutorial exactly): Gmax Material Editor New (multimaterial) Material #1 Diffuse (rectangle box) Choose temporary sky color Name it +sky Click checkered box, go to parent, do ground texturing.
Maybe there's something that the tutorial maker missed because he already had it set up and me, the new mapmaker, didn't?
I also went into Guerilla and according to the directions chose my sky (clear afternoon.sky).

did u make new shaders and put them in tags/levels/name/shaders and in the shaders did u link to the basemap and did u add a sky in guerilla

Ya know, the tutorial for making a (heightmap) map did call for making shaders. This tutorial did not. I blindy and without fail followed this tutorial, multiple times... Will get back to this thread... Lol.

Si senor, I am following that tutorial at the moment after the model creation and exportation part. Still getting the same thing even after creating a shaders folder... but tool wouldn't go through the process of creating the .scenario. I'll play around and try again (maybe existence of present .scenario wouldn't let tool create one over it..?). Edit: Okay, I deleted my <mapname> scenario in my tags folder, and started over from the point where the tool command creates the files in the tags folder and went from there. I created a shaders folder. I can't tell a difference in Sapien. Still the curse of the black square. =/ I tried to run radiosity in Sapien. I got: "radiosity_quality_0 cannot be executed now" Great, I think, so I get out of Sapien and run lightmaps in tool instead. It seemed to go well (no warnings or anything that seemed odd), so I go back to Sapien and find nothing has changed. Why am I under the black square curse? ARGH. Heightmaps don't give me this trouble, but take thirty or forty-five long minutes to export and aren't the way I want to do things right now. Also, I keep having untextured bits of map with heightmaps. If I could work out video capture software, I'd make a youtube video so that people could follow along and accurately diagnose what I'm doing wrong from what they saw/didn't see me doing. >_< Edited by Dusinator on Apr 25, 2008 at 03:41 PM

Did you put a sky file in the scenario? Did you run radiosity? Did you name the sky material correctly? (the + is in the right spot?) As for that error, I get it a lot and it does nothing....

that can sometimes be a fault in adding starting positions but i had that error one time but just moved into map in sapien and it never affected anything

It will take some tim, just make sure you make the move speed the fastest possible.

Odd, as soon as a solution is presented, the black square disappears (now there is nothingness save for the sky and, if I zoom up enough, a massive purplish octagon...). Could be the messing around I've been doing, so I'll make another map and try to get that black square again. =P Edit (to the person below so I don't waste a bump opportunity): Well, I didn't get onto my computer yesterday so I never knew till I turned it on lol. Problem (hopefully forever and through eternity) solved.
I went through a tutorial again, made a plain, flat map, did all that other stuff, and got to Sapien.
Once again, it was unable to teleport camera to starting BSP. I was left with a massive, purple, octagon. Dissapointed but bored, I decended down to the purple octagon. To my surprise, after about 10-15 seconds at x60 speed a postage stamp of a square appeared... I got closer and it was my map! It made me happy lol.
I tried this with another map that had the purple octagon, but didn't find my map and eventually couldn't even tell that I was making any progress decending.
A shaders file was not required for me to find my map in Sapien.
So after all this, I can now say I am the resident expert on getting your map to show in Sapien... or not. At least I know enough to help someone else...!
