I'm not sure if you can create a h2 map with GMAX but i'm not 100% sure. If i were you i'd just get a copy of 3ds or maya.

the bsp converter will make an obj from a scenario_structure_bsp tag. The scenario_structure_bsp tag you may be able to rip with HEK+, and the obj you may be able to import into gmax. Some bsp objs gmax can't handle for some reason, but there are ways around that. Coag and Zanzibar have been ported to H1, so it's possible somehow. Not sure how exactly, though

1st of all you can extract an .obj file with that only from a halo CE map, not halo 2. But thats only if you want to use a pre-constructed bsp. You can also import an .obj file into 3ds max. The only problem i see is the exporting part. I'm not sure if you can export your bsp to an .ass file from gmax or apply the materials correctly.
You can get a trial version of 3ds max you know. Edited by johnnyblaz20 on Apr 21, 2008 at 10:47 PM
