It's hard to get people to respond to a post you've edited in a thread at the bottom of page 1 or further back... oh well. I'm still having sapien troubles. Grr. >_<

go to the start menu and select Run...
run "RegEdit"
navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Halo HEK\Sapien
delete all in the right window

Thanks, my windows are back. My map still shows only as a sheet of gray, however. 0.o

maybe no sky, maybe you didn't run radiosity/lightmaps, and/or maybe your shaders have empty base map slots, where bitmaps should be

I figured it out. Well, sort of. I've gotten my map to show, however:



My map textures will not show. I followed the tutorial's directions to putting the bitmaps where they are needed, what to type in tool etc.
---Also, I can rotate around left and right and up and down (using the middle mouse wheel), but can't manuever any other way. (Zooming out would be nice.)
Can I disregard this odd effect and try to go about and place my scenery? Would the textures show in game? Thanks.

Edit: Here is my debug.txt. I think that it is having problems finding my textures, but I can't fathom why...

Movement 'fixed'. Afraid that tutorial left out that little detail!
I did radiosity_save... in fact, here's what all I did:
open scenario
(open command prompt with '~' key) radiosity_quality 0
(grey 0 appears)
radiosity_start (the 0's appear, but they never do count down like the tutorial says they would)
radiosity_save
(I tried this again just now, but the same result. It has to be the missing textures but I put them where the tutorial said to...)

Edit: now that I can move around in my map, would it be alright if I continued with placing objects and disregarded the 'invisible' textures? Would the textures show in game? Thanks.

I'm sure I did.
I tried it all over again. Still the same thing. Again and again I'm like wth nothing works lol. I think it's my knack for bad luck. >_< Did I mention that the brakes on my vehicle went completely out without warning today?

Edit: I watched a couple tutorials on compiling the map and adding things in Sapien... I got as far as after typing radiosity_save. The other guy had his textures, while I still had what you see in the picture above. =\

this happened to me when I was new at this. The name of the .TIFF, the material name, the .bitmap and the shader name have to be the same! It takes some getting used to but it's all good once you complete your first working map. If it's no this then double check all your shaders and make sure they have their corresponding bitmaps attached to them.

Download yap yap's tut... http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=2198 it's really helpful. teaches you to compile bitmaps and create your own shaders and such.

ps. also try and make sure your shaders are in the shaders folder in your map folder.

i also got that white screen(turns black after an few seconds...) and after an few seconds my sapien closes(only when i minimize it...)

btw i am running windows vista 64 bit with an nvidia graficks card.
and used Gmax_beginner_tut

this is like my10 try to make an map and i always get stuck at tool or sapien...
and i really want to make an map

Thanks, I'm trying that out now. I made another map with a different design and am waiting for it to be exported. I'll edit in later how this latest attempt worked out.

I just made a quick scraggly square in paint. You should see what it looks like with random trees and rocks smattered around. Maybe I should post an in-game picture. :P (Oh, and through getting it in-game I found that if the textures don't show in sapien they won't show in-game either. It looks positively AWFUL lol.)

Oh crummy. I've spent several hours on a step that should take only several seconds and things just keep going from bad to worse. Could someone just spend 20 mins, go through some tutorial, take it up to the sapien part and ensure that the textures show, then send me the files? I've spent over a week on this stupid step, and despite all the advice I'm getting absolutely nothing is working. WTH. >_<
Part of me wants to cry. =\ I just want to make a map, sheesh!

yukonmuffin: maybe it would help me if you went into further detail which files exactly need to be named what. I'm using the dangercanyon_ground and cliff files for textures. Why don't the tutorials cover these things and how do they work without it and why am I cursed with such bad luck?

eliteaxmen, You have export the map as a .3ds or .obj file and load it up in g-max or 3ds. then texture it, give it a frame and export it as a .jms

UPDATE:

I DID IT! [/CAPS]

My textures show in Sapien. You know how if you run radiosity in Sapien, the 0's count down, then you type radiosity_save and the textures appear? Well, all the times before, the 0's never counted down (they just appeared), so I though my computer was really fast or something lol. If they don't count down, then your textures won't come along is my guess.

I followed the tutorial linked to above. Also, the "modeling with gmax2" tutorial by afridge was helpful in showing how exactly to highlight the cliffs etc (before I was highlighting stuff I shouldn't have). Also, DO NOT delete any "isolated vertices" that are part of your map - this leads to very frustrating open edges and the only way I know how to fix those it to start over. =\

The only remaining problem I have is that some polygons (on the ground) are not textured. They did not show as textured in my gmax model either. I was not able to select them without selecting the cliff, or the ground depending on which I was texturing. Any advice on this?

Zynk: just DL that tutorial and the modeling with gmax 2 tut. by afridge (search for it in the tutorial section). Follow the pdf. tutorial exactly, referring to the video one on where to click etc. Worked for me! =D

Removing isolated vertices is never a bad thing. If you get open edges afterwards, you had them before. Removing the isolated vertices allowed tool to proceed further to finding them

You say you forgot to unhide your sky... is your sky is a seperate object? That sounds like open edges to me, if your ground is one object and the sky is walls and roof. Make them one. If you meant unhide sky faces before export, that doesn't matter, the exporter will still find them

Do the bitmaps have alpha channels, and are they set up in shader_environment base map slots?
Are you sure the shaders aren't just blank defaults created by tool, in the root of the tags directory?

In Yayap's tutorial, there's one problem: Grenades in player starting equipment. Don't do that. It will crash

open the shader in guerilla, and look for "base map". Thats where the bitmap goes

I dunno if this will help, but when you name the textures when you do them in Gmax, copy and paste the entire name except for the ".tif" part...
I'm going to try clearing all smoothing groups after I do the displace and copy my bitmap image onto the flat plain to create my player area. Perhaps that will cure my untextured polygon syndrom.

--Another problem I've run into--
This shows up in Sapien and also in the debug.txt after I try to run radiosity on another map I was trying out:

radiosity error: degenerate triangle [or triangle with bad uvs] (see blue in error geometry)

What does this mean and how can I fix it..?

import the wrl (debug.wrl, i think)
one by one, select an error object and use it to find the face on your mesh with the error
select the face on your mesh and apply a UVW Unwrap modifier
click Edit
the texture coordinates for that face will appear to be a line. It has 3 points. Make it a triangle
then convert to editable mesh and select the next error object and repeat
