You mine as well forget Mudbox if that is what you want to do. Mudbox is for organic models not machine or buildings.

3ds max 8.0 would be your best guess for making a biped, you are making a biped right?

Best way is to just mess around with the tools. I haven't touched mud in a while though... just experiment with the different brushes and messing with their properties.

The best tool for creating bipeds is Maya. Its made by Autodesk. I don't know much about it but i know its really good for bipeds.

mudbox is a completely different style of modeling than max/maya. they dont work the same way at all. it just depends what you prefer to use. also, mudbox uses a lot more poly's so you could have some trouble getting a biped in game if you add too much detail.
maya designed to model organic things like creatures. it works more like maya.

OK. Mudbox and zbrush are sculpting 3d programs. They are for organic modeling such as humans and terrain. A rock is terrain in thats why you saw it. And the model you make in these sculpting programs are not put into the engine. You use the high poly model you make to produce a normal map for your low mesh. If you don't know what a normal map is but it's pretty much a bump map but has better quality for the next gen games. So when ingame really the low mesh is there but it appears to be the high poly mesh with the normal map applied.
Maya is better for organic modeling. 3ds is better for nonorganic things such as buildings cars, guns, and so on. And your biped is a machine so it wouldn't be organic.
I would suggest using 3ds for what you are working on. But if you do not have 3ds you can get gmax which is 3ds but with less tools.
