import the wrl with chimp's "Import WRL" button
"select open edges" will also point out open edge errors for you, but not always

After finding the open edges on your mesh, collapse verts, or create faces to fix it

do this to get rid of slivers, which cause uv mapping errors:
switch to vertex selection mode
select 2 vertices next to each other, that are connected by an edge
in the Edit Geometry panel, in the lower right corner, is Collapse
Clicking it causes the 2 verts to become 1
you can get a similar effect on all selected verts with Weld. Gradually up the threshold until verts start collapsing

do this to patch holes where open edges are:
switch to face selection mode
in the Edit Geometry panel, in the upper left corner, is the Create button
Clicking it puts you in face creation mode
the next 3 verts you pick will create a face
selecting them in a counter-clockwise direction will create the face facing you, as opposed to backface culled
Creating faces in poly mode, you select more verts, until you select a vert you already selected

When you create 3 verts it makes a triangle, if you create the verts counterclockwise the triangle's face/surface will be facing normally, if you do it clockwise the face/surface will be facing the other way, which you might not want.

Sorry, I didn't explain at all - ok,
so, you got a mesh with a hole in front of you. Let's say a simple triangle hole. You know it's a hole because when you select open edges in edge mode, the lines around the hole turn red.
In face or poly mode, you could create a new face from the vertices at the open edges. You do this by clicking Create while in Face or Poly mode. Once clicked, it's on. Then, if you click on a vert, you'll start creating a new face or polygon. Select 2 more verts to make a face in Face mode, or if you're making a poly in Poly mode, keep clicking, and finish by clicking a vert for the 2nd time.

tip: It'll create verts while creating faces if you're not clicking on verts

or look it up in your gmax documentation
