Hey guys, I am sorry for being such a Noob, but I have been looking for a tutorial on the basics on how to texture a map in gmax. On all the tutorials I have found so far they press the M Hot Key on the keyboard and it brings up the Material Editor screen but looks differently than mine. It simply shows a screen with two buttons available (Pick and New). I would like to know what to press to get a texture.

Also, I have looked at a tutorial called "TerrainTutorialPart2" In this tutorial the guy "imports" (I don't know if that is the button he pressed to do so) a base from a campaign map, I have a base I would like to place in my map but the guy doesn't explain how he does it, and I cant find a tutorial which explains how to do that using gmax.

I have seen that this forum is kinda harsh on people asking "noobish" questions but im hoping some of you could help me out.

I have a map "model" made but don't know how to texture it...

I'd rather go without than take what you'd bring.

Well seeing as you are asking nicely, we will reply to you nicely in return.

There should be this one button on the top of the screen that opens the materials editor.
If you move your mouse over it, it should say Material Editor in the tooltip thingy that comes up... or whatever...

Yeah, I know how to pull that up, I just don't know were to go from there, my girlfriend came over (who is taking a computer animation class, and works with 3DsMax all day) and she said all I had to do was get the texture and drag it onto my (animation) Map and it will add the texture to it, I tried it and it worked...

The only other question I have is about how it "import" a base using gmax... Could anyone help me with that???

if the base is in a.max file then go to file>merge and locate the file. it will merge with your scene. if its another file type like .3ds or .obj or something then go to file>import and do the same.

Hmm... The base must have to be imported when it is in sapien or somthing, the three file names which are in the folder are... humble.gbxmodel/humble.model_collision_geometry/ and humble.scenery, am I right?

So when I get to that step, will I have to use all the files, or just one?

Also, could anyone find me a Single Player tutorial which explains how to make thing load at specific points during the game, for example units get spawned when you walk over a certain area. I am having trouble with finding Single Player tutorials...

Cool, thank you, I am on the step where I use the "tool" program, I am trying to figure it out right now, I was wondering if tool++ can be used, and if it comes with tool or if I have to DL tool in order to use tool++?

hmm, I found a tutorial on how to use tool but the guy is really confusing, basicly so far I have exported my map model and have this file "covenant_ground.P3D" I followed the guys directions, but replaced by map name with the ones he was using (common since) I think what I am doing wrong is that I don't have the "covenant_ground.P3D" file in the right location...

Where do I put the "covenant_ground.P3D" file?

My question is, how do I take my map, which is in gmax and continue the process of turning into a single player map...

Well could you at least tell me how I can open my covenant_ground.P3D up into sapian, or convert it into a different format so I can edit it...

I found a website which says that in order to compile a map into a scenario files you need to use a program called chimp. I DLed the chimp program, opened the readme file and found this:

----------------------------------------
GMax Usage Instructions
----------------------------------------

1) Load/Create your map

2) From the GMax main menu select 'MAXScript' then select 'Run Script' and open 'chimp.ms'

3) Select the 'Listener Window' Option <<<<????

4) Press the 'Export Halo Map' button

5) When the process is complete you need to run the supplied 'GrabListener.exe' Program. Ensure that you only have one copy of GMax running when you do so.

6) Save the Listener data to your Halo\Data\Levels\Test\YourMapName\Models folder as YourMapName.jms

7) Open YourMapName.jms in your favorite text editor and remove everything before and including the line '***** Begin Jms *****'. Then goto to bottom of the file and delete everything after and including the line '***** End Jms *****'. Save YourMapName.jms

8) You should now be able to compile your map into a scenario using tool

My only problem so far is step 3, it says to select the listener window, but it dont tell me where that is located, under the MAXScript tab I found a button called MAXScript Listener but I dont think thats what it wants me to do, could you help me with this?

after yuo open the chimp.ms script, click on the drop down menu that says chimp and select it again. the options should open up. continue as the tutorial says.
