Well, ive been around this community for alot longer than some of you might think, and i certainly remember being one of those people who heard on filefront about gearbox launching a "custom edition" of halo for pc users. almost 4 years later i finished my single greatest map and now am going to focus on school.

There are however, a few things you should think about. Many of the great maps we play today were made quite awhile ago, such as coldsnap, hugeass, and many others. One of the reasons they were so good was because making maps back then required more skill then they do today, mainly because we lacked the utilities and tools that do things automatically for us that we used ot have to do ourselves, like rigging a biped or typing a script. With the coming of these new utilities, many modders of lesser skill have been able to create more advanced content than ever before. This is both a good thing, and a bad thing.

When new modders come to this site, and they see a truly innovative map, such as area 53 or such, they might be inspired to go and create something new and original. But what if they came here, and they saw one of the many distasteful, easily and quickly created "mods" of other maps that people worked hard to create? what would they think? do the making of these maps help build up or help tear down our community?

i dont like the direction that halo ce is headed. was it not for halomaps.org, i doubt this game would still be played today, but It is changing from an editor that required skill and usually resulted in great works of art to basically a garbage can for what some people might claim to be "art".

Edit

I personally do not think that hek+ was made to rip maps so mods of existing maps could be made, but if i recal correctly, some one was making a single player map, and needed the single player widgets in order to complete the map. So, the Halo Editing Kit plus was programmed not to extract these tags for recompilation, but for learning HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF.
Consider the following a "prophesy": one day, someone will make a truely perfect map, and halo ce will turn around. Only you can make it happen however.

with that, i bid you all farewell untill summer.

Im guessing here, but I'd think HEK+ was meant more for a person to learn how things were done, and then using that knowledge, make their own, not just take the map and change a few projectiles..

Me too. Also, I think HEK+ was made for some of those unreachable tags (bipeds, ai, etc.).

See you next summer, Sonic.

Sonic, even though you wont be around much, i think you should still practive your modeling and other things whenever you have time from now until summer. then when you get back youll be much better. then you can make coliseum III really good. =D

Well sonic thanks again for making the sound for the checkers map.

I do understand what you mean and life should come first. I don't think Halo CE is going in the wrong direction. Just look at some of the stuff that is up and coming. I think people just need reminded about how creative you can get with the HEK. even if you don't like checkers, checkers.map was creative and something that got way more attention then i ever thought it would.

There is a huge reason why modeling is sort of at a stand still. if you look there are next to no advanced modeling tutorials. And all the advanced ones coming out seen to be for 3ds max only. And gmax is really too simple for advanced tutorials.

what halo ce really needs is a new modeler with an exporter. Something with far more tools then gmax, yet still cheap or free.

Only program that comes to mind is Blender, and it is horrible.

I think I might leave aswell, Americas Army is SOO MUCH MORE intense. It's just the kind of game for me, tkers get sent to jail maps and have to re-enter the servers, and you cant just run out and ruthlessly pwn. you need tactic.

Blender isnt horrible, I know someone who can make stuff in blender that is better then some stuff I see mad in 3Ds

I think I'll be here for a while. I love Halo and all the stuff that has been made for it that I didn't think was possible. I remember talking to my friends about making our town and puting it into Halo and how awsome it would be. I'm not too amazed about CMT V2 singleplayer. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be downloading it, but I can't wait for Zteams singleplayer and all the maps they are converting. I wonder if they will ever do Turf. I gave up.
