I think i get what you're saying. And it's not All impossible. I mean, sure, we could create/edit the bitmaps to make them more realistic and just replace the ones in the bitmaps.map to update the entire game. Do the same for the sounds. But models? models you'd have to do in every map, on everyone's PC. Maybe if you found a way to do like an auto update where it would just replace it on everyone's PC's, but getting the access to do that isn't really possible. And updating it to using DX11, you'd need the source code of the engine, which microsoft isn't willing to hand over. All in all, yeah. Textures, Sounds, Models, Animations, ect. All doable, not practical in all senses. But possible.

EDIT: What if you did all of the modifications and built a new installer?
Edited by grunt_eater on May 21, 2014 at 12:22 PM

you dont necessarilly have to make a new update, what you could do is use NSIS (an exraction program) as a way of creating an installer that would replace the current files with the updated files we've made.. and i understand the whole dx11 wouldnt work now, i did a bit of research on it all and it was a bit stupid of me to suggest that :) but yeah, that's how we'd go about updating the files ^_^ anyway, talk later.

Not sure if sarcasm or.. xD

Hey guys,
Sorry, I've not posted in over two weeks.. I've just been really busy with stuff lately :)
I'm currently in the process of getting a new graphics card and a new case and everything, meaning I've had to sell my current PC to be able to afford the new stuff :3 so just bare with me for like two more weeks max, then i'll be able to get something done :3

Dx9 can do almost everything dx11 can.

Except for tesselation, some hardware fx, performance, code optimization...

spot on, both of you.
also spikey, i'm interested to see your particle work, we have an hlsl wizard helping us out, and i hope u guys can work together.

Yeah, i'm still currently trying to find all of my old stuff aswell as combine my new stuff at the moment :) but yeah, i'll be more than happy to get stuff to you when i can :3

adhfsflgkojag;lmdlkgljglka wut?! xD i dont think it'll look like that.. that's a really high bar to reach xD it'll look more like bf3-ish hopefully

on it now :3

uurm.. sure? xD
I'm a graphics designer, primarily based around textures, sprites and particle effects.. i also do random stuff that i post to here: spikeymikey0196.deviantart.com
I'm very basic with what i can do with coding at the moment, but i'm currently touching up my skills day in day out :3 i know html, javascript, a little c++ and how to code in cube 2.. but at the moment, thats about it xD
I'm willing to learn though, so if you set me a task, i will go and learn how to do it, then do it xD i've done a massive overhaul of Cube 2 and made my own version of the engine with global illumination and better textures, effects, sounds and gui :3 i tried to do modelling but i'm not that good at it, i'll try provide some links to the models i've made :3

The main reason why i want to go to dx11 is for the water, and maybe a few other things.. but yeah, i do reckon making shaders would probably be better, i guess :3 but i wouldnt know where to start with making one xD and CMT are amazing with what they've done, but yet again, i'm not too sure i'd be good enough for them :) and i'd love to join you guys, i just hope that i actually do a good enough job :3 i just need to find some of my old work with graphics and stuff like that ^_^ because right now, i feel i have nothing in my arsenal to show you guys xD

God, this post has exploded more than i expected xD i'll just do the same as last time, i guess :3

sounds like a nice idea y don't you give some help to the man who is making OpenSauce ?

I would try and help the guy who is making OpenSauce, but i feel like i wouldnt be much help as there wouldnt really be much i could do to help xD i prefer to work from the ground up anyway and it'll be more rewarding creating something from start to finish :3

If this would work, wouldn't you need the dx11 libraries in the actually game itself to work with dx11?

I'll be honest, i'm not that well versed in DirectX, but that does make alot more sense xD maybe there could be some way of tricking the engine to load dx11 libraries instead of dx9?

This a highly ambitious project.
I would just like to know why you think this will work...
Edited by Dumb AI on Apr 30, 2014 at 09:38 AM

I'm not so much a believer that it will work, because i know using outdated game engines can be a bit of a bitch.. but i do feel that upgrading the original engine somehow, allows it to stay original :3 and if it doesnt work, we can always put our efforts into something else? like i always say, theres no harm in trying..

Will there be a day, when we see a thread of progress or custom content instead of "i thinkwe should do dis..." ...

Bring back the forum from afew years ago.

I know what you're getting at, but i'm not here to just suggest ideas.. i'm motivated to actually get stuff done. all i need is help, hence why i posted on here because i know that there are alot of thriving individuals in this domain :3

I thought the forums a few years ago was full of people hating on rips and causing major forum flame wars...? How far back are you saying? -_-

Well, at least he seems like he could do stuff to help out also and not just can you do all of this for me. Mind showing some models and stuff that you made spikeymikey0196? Maybe that would get more people into helping if they see that you could do stuff also and not just boss people around.

I remember the old forums too well xD i deactivated my old account because of how many people where there trying to add gasoline to a fire xD it was like 4chan..

and i'll see what stuff i conjure up :3 i dont do models but i do graphics and coding.. it'll be a little hard to show you the coding stuff, but graphics shouldnt be a problem :3 just give me a few days to have a look through my old stuff ^_^

Sorry for not commenting soon enough, I've been swamped lately... look for your quote below to see my reply to it.

So what are you gonna do, write your own source code? There is absolutely no way for CE to support dx11 without the source code. Even with OS, there is a limit to gfx and unoptimized stuff may lag. Closest thing for us would be if H3 EVER geta ported, it MAY support dx11/12.

I am not saying i would write my own source code unless it actually had to come down to that, i just thought that i could maybe create a custom dx file and use that to make the game look more advanced.. i noticed that SweetFX managed to create a custom dx9 file that changes the way the engine runs and such and i figured maybe you could create a file that contains dx11 properties but is named 'd3d9.dll' so that it runs through the game engine.. i'm not entirely sure if it'd work but i figured it'd be worth a try atleast. also Halo 3 wont be brought to pc at all.. halo is an xbox exclusive item..

Are you saying you have the skills to do this and want help, or are you saying that you would like people with skills to do this and you would try to help?

Also, what engine would you try to do this in? UDK? Cryengine? Super mega ultra OS version +9000?

Edit:

Oh, and yeah. It does sound interesting. :3

I am a bit experienced in coding but i am a graphics designer, so I can create textures and normal maps and such.. i will help in coding where i can, but that is probably the main area I need help. I have quite a few contacts that can help with models and other stuff, but i figured the task will get done alot faster with more than one person, especially with people who know what they're doing in terms of coding :3

It's not that it's something hard, neither it's something easy too. The problem is blam. Blam engine is too limited, and HEK too. These engines where build for good gameplay, not good graphics. We should consider moving to a new, more fresh engine, like Unreal, Unity, Cryengine 3. But who will listen to me anyways...

I wouldnt say that the engine is limited, it's more the fact that not many people have really tried to do anything with the engine itself so it's unfamiliar to most of us.. Like BKTiel said "
Absence of assets to play with is my guess. Rather hard to make halo maps without the appropriate vehicles and weapons".
Look at some of the stuff you can do with the old cod engines.. UGXMods are a great example.
Maybe if we hack at the engine enough, we can actually make it run the way we want it to.. it just takes time, patience and alot of know how.

Sorry compadre, but I've been over half a year with a project called "Halo: Overhaul" which is a retexturing of Halo in HD.
I'm about to end and I will not rename my project.
Greetings and good luck with your project.

My project: http://goo.gl/gEQuZb

Bro, the project isn't actually going to be called "Halo Overhaul", it's just the name of the post as that's basically what i'm intending to do.. Your project is looking pretty darn good though, if we actually get anywhere and you wish to collaborate or you need help with textures, just ask..

So yeah, i hope that's cleared a bunch up :3 i'll try get on here more frequently..

Okay, so i've been wanting to do this for a long time.
I'm looking to totally convert halo ce into a brand new Halo (sort of)
I want to go through and totally refurbish this game from the ground up.
I want to totally change the fundementals (sounds, textures, models, lighting, shaders, hud etc) so that they're more modern and makes halo look a million times better than it does now ^_^
i'm a strong believer in keeping things to their original form, but maybe, updating everything besides the actual gameplay itself, maybe we can get something amazing started ^_^
so if you're interested, pm me or reply to this post..

------- UPDATE 19/06/14 -----------------

Hey guys, sorry i've not been on for a good few weeks.
My girlfriends mother passed away and i've kind of been a little offset by it all, if you wish to talk among yourselves, i'm sure you'd be able to accomplish something.. i'm no longer in the frame of mind to be doing anything for a while as it's hit me pretty hard.
You're all a bunch of budding individuals anyway, and i'd probably just hold you all back.. thank you for taking interest though :s
