Now you're wondering, "what's this? I can do whatever I want!" Sure, but maybe you might want to take a few minutes to read the following before you prove it.

For any of you who are new to the forums and are considering making maps for Halo, or any other game for that matter, I have some advice for you. I mean no disrespect by using the term noobie, but this is some important advise that you should take note of (mentally, that is). As you've seen in the title, my advice to you, the novice, is not to release your first maps. When I say novice, however, I don't mean people who have had modeling experience but are new to Halo. It is perfectly acceptable for someone with experience to release their first few maps. Take it from me, my first map wasn't anything special, but I released it because I felt it was worthy. The question you need to ask yourself is, "is my map worthy?" Because it's your work, do not give yourself too much credit or praise. not only does this create a poor first impression, but you're fooling yourself into believing that you do not need improvement. Everyone needs improvement, because nobody is perfect. Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes better, which brings me to my next point. The whole point of your first maps is practice. There is no point in releasing practice material. It's like selling a peice of paper with some scribbles on it, where you've tried to learn how a variety of pencil lines look. Nobody will buy it. Never use the excuse that your first released map is poor because you're still a noobie. It doesn't fool us old-timers, you just chose not to practice first. Now, why should you care what we think about your map? There's more to consider than it being a waste of your time to release. It's also a waste of webspace. Poor Dennis at www.halomaps.org has to pay out of his pockey to host your first maps, make them count! So, before you go posting anything other than comments in that release forum, or run off uploading something to halomaps, consider what I've said and ask the question "is my map worthy?" This isn't a rule, just some honest advice I would like to give from observations I've made.

This is important do not release your first maps; unless there good;.

It would do no good to post something like this 2 times a month. people who make mods or maps want to feel important so they will pretty much always release their first map. You got to understand when someone finishes a map even if it sucks they feel really great. And they should feel good as making a map and getting even the most simple thing to come out can sometimes be a real pain. So thats why people will release their first maps alot of times.

also realize that halomaps does not judge maps based on gameplay or look. They just base their hosting on if it doesn't have the name of a current hosted map and if it runs in slayer mode. If they judged on gameplay and look then halomaps would not have much to host.

so because of this people will continue to upload their first maps alot of times. I think they should not but they will.

Note: some peoples first map can be quite good, though it's rare.

When I tested my first map, I was like "This map is bad! I don't want to torture the Halo gamers with this!" So I never uploaded it, then later on I deleted it because it was hurting my eyes.

I would have to disagree partially, not totally. If they want to upload the map then fine, they can, there aren't any rules on the quality of a map, just contents. They would just get a low rating and less downloads. Only thing I could think of why they not to is it would give Dennis more work to do (in less of course he enjoys testing maps, but he might, I'm not sure :) ).

But my opinion is just as valuable as yours, but mine is always right.

my first map was a map called fishy. it was called that because when you look at it from overhead it is in the shape of a fish. it was crappy, but i actually got the model out the other day and worked on it some. i got it as far as sapien and was populating it when... my computer committed suicide and restarted itself. so my work was lost.

my second map is a WIP for about 3 weeks now. its called hotel. theres another thread on it.

i dont understand what right you people have to discourage people to release their maps. Sure, they may not be as good as Hugeass, or Coldsnap, but for you people to tell a person who just made their first map not to show other people and get feedback on what to do better, then you people REALLY must think your something. STOP TELLING PEOPLE WHAT TO DO!

there is a difference in your first maps and your first released maps.

some people will make dozens of maps to build up their skills and then release a map. Most true first maps are ugly and plain boxes.

when making a map really look at it and decide if it's worth releasing. most first maps are not worth realizing. it makes you look like a total noob if you release a plain box

Thats first map he made that he plans on releasing, I'll bet. You see he followed the rule and look how much respect you gave him. I mean when you follow the rule you can be popular from the start, my first map, or rather my team's and my map: Archive
http://forum.halomaps.org/index.cfm%3Fpage=topic&topicID=9881
That being my "first map" in no way means I don't have older ones lying around that weren't worth releasing. Its a simple rule and sometimes it is neccesary to judge yourself, regardless of what may be good for your self-esteem.

Hmm, you bring up a good point... That would be my first map too, considering I'm on the team too... That is, if anybody asked me to do anything for it. Looks good anyway.

See honestly I wish I didnt upload my first map.

http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=2170

Or my Second

http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=2169

I was still learning on useing the software then. After Exposed I made maybe 20 maps before I made Underpass just to gain experience. Now that I know more I can make better quality maps.

Underpass Beta
http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=2975

Just compare the differences. Forestry, Exposed suck compared to Underpass.
