do you realise that this always leads to a stupid fight between noobs and experts right? if you dont have money get gmax. its very good for what it is if your a student (me) or your just rich then get 3ds max becuase its naturally much better than gmax.

why paying for somthing that you never may be good at?Why buying it when you will stop use it.When you have gotten 3ds max you will just spam and ask about tutorials when they are laying there on halomaps and the ghosts Site.

Cause it's free does that make it better? cause it's expensive does that make it better? it depends on what you view to be better. it's a subjective question.

yes it is. it really depends who you are. if you have no expirience, you should get gmax to learn. 3ds will be that much eisier if you get it.

personally i view gmax as better cause it's a free program and most can't get 3ds max..legally. Some will argue for 3ds max cause it's supported and more stable, and also some will say cause it's newer it's better. But you run into problems with that argument because you can't just judge something better cause it's more new. So to me gmax is better.
I basically say 3ds max does not exist. Why, because i won't ever be able to afford it so i don't even consider it an existing option for maping.

halo 1 was made using 3ds max 5.1 i believe, but of course halo was developed quite awhile back. Quote: --- Original message by: _TheArbiter_ u cant even make wheels for ground vehicles in gmax.......it just sucks... Well duh everyone knows that. But you don't need to be able to make vehicles to be a good maper and modeler. There are many other things you can get good at in gmax. But if you can't afford 3ds max or are not going to be a total piece of trash and get a non-legal version then all you got is gmax. it don't matter that you cant make vehicles, not everyone even wants to. you can't say something sucks just based on lack of one feature, it's not everything. Quote: --- Original message by: Tarzan 3ds Max owns hands down. More powerful tools, runs smoother, eats less system resources, etc... On the ease of use, I like Max's UI better, but that's just personal preference. I like gmax's Material Editor better, but again - personal preference. It just depends on the person.
However, you would NEVER see a professional organization using gmax. 3ds is the professional industry standard.
Oh - and BTW... in H3 documentaries, you can see some of the computer development... and what are they using? 3ds Max 9. Woot woot!! yeah im with tarzan, cuz why would lucas arts use Gmax (that would be very funny) and yeah they are using max 9, what did they use for halo2 max7?????

If you ask me it would defenatly be BLENDER FOUNDATION!!!! Just read all of my forums topics, at least about every 10 of them I ask something about Blender. It is free, but you have to export it alot into Gmax and stuff.

Yea, Gmax is the best free program because its supported more than Blender. I know of only one other person who used Blender for a map and stuff, SE Spider, and I dont think it was ever released. Also he made a sentinel from the ghosts of onyx, and a brute spike grenade (months ago, I think around the time the beta was first announced. I dont see much of a difference between the actual one and his.)
PS: 3ds rules, but only through experience can one know. Edited by Caboose117 on Jun 4, 2007 at 10:05 PM

i dont like maya although it is still autodesk i find it confuzing. it is, however, VERY good for modeling bipeds. as mirroring is simple and it has that function to lay out the body parts in 2d. that way you can save the picture, open in photoshop, draw texures, import it back into maya, and it will uvwmapp it right onto the biped. i have worked with maya but i dont recommend it unless you have decent expirience with 3d software. not to mention, its 5000 bucks (at least form what i heard)

I should have kept the link but there was a place on the set that sold Max 8 for just $169.95 or close to that. All i know is that it was cheep and full version but it was direct download i believe. You might be able to find it.
