A multipurpose map has multiple purposes (woah, I know right?!), not JUST spec.
A multipurpose map HAS the specular information when you compile it, you're far better off just making the entire bitmap an actual decent multipurpose map.
And don't get any of these confused with normal maps, which are different things entirely.

If you think of each channel as a black and white image with more color meaning more white and less color meaning more black then this will be easier to explain.


Alpha: The more white the alpha channel is the more the texture will be tinted whatever color it is being tinted. This is used on the player's character to change their color.

Red: You can apply a detail map to a model which will tile the detail map across the main texture(the base map). This can be used to add more tiny details to a texture without making it really high res. The more white the red channel the more the detail map will show up on that area of the texture.

Green: This one is simple, the more white in the green channel the more that area will glow whatever color you have the shader set to glow as.

Blue: Simple as well, the more white in the blue channel the more the reflection will show up on an area.


Take a look at the cyborg multipurpose map and you'll see how these work. ALSO, guerilla says that the channels are actually in a different order. DON'T LISTEN TO IT. Those are the order for Xbox multipurpose maps. I would know, I mod xbox and part of a tool I wrote has the specific purpose of swapping the channels to and from xbox and pc arrangement.



EDIT: Yes I understand you are using open sauce to add normals to your models and specular COLOR to the models, but a multipurpose map does FOUR OTHER THINGS as I have stated above.

Also, the specular COLOR in an open sauce model shader only allows you to change what COLOR the model is tinted when light reflects off it. You still NEED a multipurpose map to make it actually shiny.

I no all this .. but as I did say some things just don't need Multipurpose maps and some things do as well as making the map to big

If it's a biped it needs a multipurpose to change the color when you switch teams or change the color of your character. It also NEEDS A MULTIPURPOSE TO MAKE THAT SPECULAR COLOR MAP YOU APPLIED TO IT DO ANYTHING.

im not stubborn you just do not read a thing I say do you it dose not need a multipurpose map to change color when you switch teams or when change the color of your character... see that biped it's green and it's can go all the color's

this is what ill do as so not to start a WAR I put a new video showing you are way off

No one said you can't have color change without multipurpose.

Your shaders could look so much better if you had multipurpose maps.
But no, you refuse to accept that multipurpose maps are necessary.

I could show you how good they could potentially look. If you think what you have looks good, they will be amazing with a multipurpose map.

there is a detail map in the ground shader environment do you mean put a better one in it? ... I would love to put a normal map in it but I cant

and the biped will not the look same even if you die you will get a new look
and IM just testing some normal maps so the next update will be better


and im thinking of making a new test map

im not using them I don t see it as a big deal so stop making it big deal of it.. man now the update I was working on how too get the textures too look good using os just os and if I don't need multipurpose maps im testing and so far multipurpose maps looks bad on 16bit textures as multipurpose maps 4bit

Just asking, but do you realize that the reason the rubber parts on your spartans are being tinted green/red/yellow is because they don't have a color change map? If you want to make the rubber not be the same color as their armor you can use a multi with a color change channel to mask off the rubber.

Understand that we have been a part of this community for far longer than you and if we try to offer advice then you should at least consider what we are saying. I've been modding Halo CE since 2006 so I've got about 8-9 years of this under my belt.

I hoping too keep it:/ as for the 2nd and 3rd pic had the fix;\ I don t no do you like the look?

Also, I've never been a fan of the undersuits being colored. I've always thought Halo 4's undersuit coloring was fugly and if I were to ever play it I would keep it a default gray.

If you want an EASY way to control how much color goes where on your spartans then use a multipurpose texture with an alpha channel. Here's the original spartan as an example.



See how only the armor parts are white and everything else is black? The more white you make an area the more that area will be colored.


Multipurpose maps do other stuff too. You see how the bottom left half of the spartan's back has more detail than the rest?



That's because it uses a multipurpose that only applies the crusty metal detail to where there is red. The more red, the more the detail shows up.




Blue controls how shiny an area is and green controls how much it glows.

o did you see the biped in the back he didn t have the tint form looking at the old halo 3 form xbox there is not tint so ill have too take it off
