WinRAR can be free.
THIS IS LEGAL. I don't knwo why they make you pay for it when on the same page they have it for free, it confuses me, but whatever.
You are confused. It's a free download but the End User License agreement that that you have to agree to before you can install the program specifically states that after the 45 day trial period you must purchase a license or remove the software.

tugzip is awesome anyhow. And really not many even need .rar compression. Also halomaps only hosts in .zip format.

I don't really get why they don't just stop it working if you don't buy it :/

also, winzip is installed with windows, and as i never opted into it, i shouldn't have to pay under australian law (correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as i know in australia, you have to opt into anything, not opt out. that's why spam doesn't come from australia (legally))

I cannot speak for Australia since I am in the US, however in the US the software licensing rules that apply say if you have a trial version then when the trial period expires you have to either purchase a license or remove the software. The reason it does not stop working is that the software vendor is relying on the good nature of most people and the "nag" screen and it is a left over of the shareware mind set started in the late 70's.

You will have to look into your local software licensing laws to see if it the same. I suspect that for the most part it is, but I am not sure.

Windows XP and Windows Vista will natively allow you to extract files from Zip archives. Which is one of the reasons we convert all archives to Zip format.

I didn't know about WinZip being shareware... Being that I never used it for XP or Vista, and it came installed with WinME and Win98SE [at least, it did for me], I just assumed it was free. I did know that WinRAR wasn't free, but a lot of people don't care and keep it anyway... ignorant people, don't like paying for other people's hard work. >O

However, for those who want to pay? Don't get WinRAR, get PowerArchiver... For free alternatives, just use XP or Vista's built in .zip extractor, or for those pesky .rar's, sometimes you can get away with changing the extension to .zip, and then extracting it; if not, just download the program Dennis suggested on the front page.

I find it amusing how keeping WinRAR without paying is illegal, yet downloading MP3's isn't. (Yes, this has been proven; RIAA isn't cracking down on MP3 downloading, but people redistributing full albums for profit. MP3 sharing isn't illegal. <3)

Rofl. I just realized I said this a few months ago, in a different way of wording it. xDDD I'm so slow.

I already had the ability to extract and compress files, if that is what you were pointing out, on my computer as a default, and I only use WinRAR for extracting WinRAR files. I hate extracting WinRAR files. =/

Are you the person who made Extinction? If so, how hard was it to make the Scarab?

7 zip works perfectly fine. Unzips all compressed files. Rar, zip, etc.

WinRAR is betteer than TUGZIP!
The point of the post was not which is better or worse but that WinRAR and WinZip are commercial products you are suppose to pay for even if they keep working. TugZip like 7Zip are freeware alternatives that do not violate the user agreements of the commercial products and keep you from being a software pirate.

I like the program, Dennis. I have now been using TugZip, and it does all that i need it to do - open and create .zip archives.

So, thanks.
