There is no "maximum". It all depends on how much the engine is capable of drawing and how much it will lag old PCs. Really, Reach bipeds are over ten thousand polies.

Nah, he's just asking how much is practical (apparently 10,000 polies for a biped). PCs these days can handle more, so I'd probably go with a higher poly count for many things. Does anyone know the recommended poly count for a BSP?
