the work i do is similar to firefight portent, i like survival and the features made with scripting.
but im starting to feel like editing/creating halo is kind of a waste of time. a cooperative/multiplayer online experience that syncs over net isnt going to happen.
i want to go to work on survival game i can call my own. anyone thats used unreal could you give me an opinion or some feedback about it?

Unreal engine is quite nice, lots of features. There are a lot of tutorials on how to use it, but don't feel limited to only unreal engine. I do feel that CryEngine is more graphically advanced than Unreal, but in my personal cases I prefer Unreal over others. It really depends on you (and/or your team members) to be great artists. Your game is only as good as you can make it.
If you are brave enough and have the time, spend some time creating your own games with C++ and a graphics engine, but I doubt you are asking for that.

Graphics arent a concern to me, really its gameplay/features/immersion that im aiming for.
having played a few games that have been released on unreal engine (borderlands 1&2, DMC, dungeon defenders, mass effect and gears of war series etc...) i know the engine is capable of alot, even an mmo like dc universe.
Xiao, where did you learn to use unreal engine? ive really only played around with it, seems overwhelming its alot to learn. can you point me in the right direction?

I mean I totally don't know a team who is doing that. hint hintEdited by Guilty_spark on Sep 5, 2013 at 06:55 PM

Try out the UDK or Cryengine, those are probably your best bets at creating something like what you've said. Keep in mind, its quite a lot of work though to create a co-op SP online that syncs with other players. It's about the equivalent to creating an MMO, and those things very rarely get finished by modders who set out to do so. I personally would say to try out UDK. It uses a friendly node based system for level scripting that you can use called kismet (you can still code in your own stuff, like weapon functions, vehicle functions, ui, game mechanics etc using unreal script), and its material editor, for the most part, is easy to use. Its very well documented and you should never really have much problems attempting to find the information you need, unlike cryengine, which is poorly documented, which is unfortunate because of how powerful it really is. Heres something I made in just a couple of days with little experience using the engine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8gE5eXoPU8 (I got alot further but never uploaded a new video.. I should do that!) The level editor is also really easy to use and you can create levels pretty roughly and efficiently by blocking out geometry and quickly placing static meshes. It's also a lot of fun to use. Quote: --- Original message by: wafflesQuote: --- Original message by: Xiao Unreal engine is quite nice, lots of features. Does Cry have a node based material system though? I will say that CryEngine's lighting looks nicer imo, but udk's material system is not only fun, but very powerful. Its just too bad that udk 3's translucency sorting is terrible to manage. No. Cryengine is very similar to Halo CE in terms of setting up shaders tbh. UDK is node based, and can get very complex (if you're trying to do something complex!) if you don't have much experience with it. Edited by Higuy on Sep 5, 2013 at 07:29 PM

Xiao, where did you learn to use unreal engine? ive really only played around with it, seems overwhelming its alot to learn. can you point me in the right direction? Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) is capable of making an MMO yes, however UDK is not. UDK is the free version with no access to the engine's source code. I love the UE and I am always on the forums browsing and trying to help to the best of my ability. Back to what I was saying though, it has a very nice UI and asset pipeline which helps to get you going very fast. CryEngine 3 (CE3) has some major "straight out of the box" components that UDK doesn't have. For an example, real time dynamic lighting. However, the pipeline is a bit more complicated as well as it takes a while to get used to the UI as it is not always straight forward. I use CE3 occassionally, I prefer UE3 as I want to be able to jump into Unreal Engine 4 when it is available for public licensing.
