PRESENTS

Sandtrap V4

by Kills Alone and the H2MT Crew

December 30th 2012

ABOUT:
Sandtrap makes use of weapons from Halo 2, 3, & Reach.

V4 features an updated BSP, scenery, lighting, shaders, textures, weapons, & sky.

Originally V4 was going to be geared more towards a Halo 3 remake and so many of the H3 weapons are now included such as the: Spartan Laser, Missile Pod, Gravity Lift, Bubble Shield. Along with a few Reach weapons: Red Sited Shotgun, Reach Magnum.

I decided the orange sky had to go so I used a slightly modified Highplanes (Tombstone) sky.

The outer tower ring is scaled down a little and now has its own lights (thanks to Troy).

I have added a vehicle ceiling (of 10) for the Banshee so it cannot fly too high and be impossible to fight against.

There is also an invisible barrier preventing the players from going passed the towers, this is in response to players going out there in CTF and making the game take forever.

Many others tweaks to the BSP and scenery. The ground terrain sand shader is now using a texture I created years ago from the Sahara Desert. It along with the sky and new building shader give the map and improved visual appeal that was lacking in previous versions. No the colors are not that of the original, they are something more interesting, something more custom. Something like a painted desert.

It is clearly superior to the previous version in every way. If your not gonna add anything to a post and release besides a meanignless one single sentance...just don't post. But please, feel free to provide a better version if you think this one is crap. we will be eagerly awaiting your top notch map making goodies....

V3 is not retired, the two maps serve a different purpose. V3 is closer to the H3 version, V4 is the version I wanted from the beginning and it looks amazing. IMO V4 is far superior to V3 in every way, better textures/shaders, better models, less errors, cannot escape the map, actual H3 weapons, extra and improved vehicle scenery models. But sure, read a book by its cover you noobs.

why is the download a .exe? .zip or .rar work just fine for, you know, a map.

Well then I have to disagree with you, I think it looks excellent, in fact it turned out better then I thought it was going to. I wanted to take the terrain and sky in a more custom direction rather then emulate everything about the H3 original; its now inspired by a painted desert look based on Earth's own Sahara Desert. Which ties back into my first map Template and some other unreleased desert collection on the back-burner.

On Template SYM I was testing some of my first custom weapons, this is years ago, and this guy I'm playing with tells me that he knows where my map is based without me ever having told him or anyone else at that point. He said he'd been to a part of the Sahara Desert and that he instantly recognized it in a variant of the same ground texture as this very map (Sandtrap V4). So its fitting that one of my final releases connect to the beginning of my H2 mapping projects, and in general I think real sand looks better then tiled sand.

Sure I could have retained the older more classic tiled look of the sand but to me this version is much more unique. If only I had remembered to make the golden sections more like volcanic olivine (as in bright green) veins.

And the sky has a much more dramatic look where the colors meet the ground texture and blend in many colors (colors other then variants of brown and tan) in a way that is very beautiful. Admittedly the sky in V3 was a disappointment.

You could always port your map to H2V or take advantage of our open source community policy; we have released most of our map source for anyone to enjoy and if possible improve on, but somehow I don't see you doing so as H2V MP is not long for this world.

So while I always appreciate positive criticism, I think my version is a lot more inspired then an original copy. And don't let it get to you, I call everyone a noob; because we all are noobs in some capacity.

@master noob

I release in .exe form because it is a self extracting 7-Zip file, the 7z archive format provides insane compression and you do not need to have 7-Zip installed on your system to extract one in this format. So its smaller and anyone can open it. Zips file? The 90's called, they want their archive format back.

And your proud of that Sandtrap map for CE? Messed up UVW maps all over the place, and completely unoriginal textures tiled like it's going out of style. How about trying to create something unique instead of a rip of something that exists already? And you mentioned you worked on it? As in helped out a larger team or solo? Kills and I do all our work almost 100% solo...no others help us in the maps creation, we only get help or inspiration from other members with additional in-game tags like weapons vehicles, etc...

If I'm a bit harsh sorry, but I don't take kindly to people ripping fellow H2MT team members for their hard work. The point for this map was to be a Sandtrap "inspired variant, not a complete copy of an already complete crap map for an aging game. Simply put, we don't try to make complete 100% accurate remakes. Case in point, my Crater ODST map. While it follows the basic design, I changed the layout to be more custom and better than the original Firefight map.

However you describe "better" will always be subject to different opinions by others.

I've never seen any map cause that. Although I have seen a few maps cause hard lockups for H2V.

I've played this map with quite a few others and no-one has had any fatal error, try downloading the map in-game from an A H2MT server.

You just browse the server list and look for the four servers labeled A H2MT 1 through 4.

I just updated 3 and 4 today, adding many additional maps for Big Team Battle and Small Map playlist variants.

I was really wondering what you were on about when you asked for an IP. Maximum Lulz. Though I do wish H2V supported direct IP connections.
