Quote: --- Original message by: TM_updatesQuote: --- Original message by: DarkHalo003 ODST did have boring Firefight maps, but I'm content with this one. And custom maps are always better, but I'm not going to complain about this simply because it's interesting and cool enough as is. Complaining about this would be like if someone complained about having $150,000 when they could have had $160,000 when in actuality they could have had nothing at all. It's kind of pointless to complain about this sort of thing, isn't it Higuy? Yes, we should never complain about wanting new content rather than rehashed content. Wouldn't want to give the industry the message that we are 100% content with rehases now would we? Oh woops we already did that with the CoD DLC thing, and with people like DarkHalo003 cheering forth remakes in the most strict sense. Yay to rehash! Nay to new content! You know you want it. And CoD is an atrocity. It sucks to begin with, so anything they do is automatically stupid. [/satire] It's not that I wouldn't mind having new content, like having a Firefight that allows you to take to the skies or actually make decent use of vehicles, but considering what we're being handed for this release, I'm alright with it. You actually get to have AI as allies and all of that good stuff, meaning you don't have to have XBL to actually play firefight for a fun experience. That's how I see it at least.

Welp that wasn't my point "It's kind of pointless to complain about this sort of thing, isn't it Higuy?" Answer is a clear "nope" and will stay that way forever, forever ever, forever ever. Forever never seams that long until you're wrong. Etc...

I feel a rehash for CE is in order, simply because people will see the actual CEA version and drool everywhere and will then begin wanting a version for CE. Look at previous examples; the community has remade quite a lot of maps from Halo 2, 3, ODST, and Reach for this engine. However, I strongly feel CE needs its own unique Firefight map. This map should be our own Unearthed; designed from the ground up for nothing but Firefight. It shouldn't be a BSP rip from an existing map (you could use pieces to build your map, but ultimately this map should be unique and pure bred for Firefight mayhem). If someone has a good theme for me, I don't see why I couldn't build it once I finish Requiem (it is coming along, albeit slowly). By theme I mean a simple statement detailing the map in general, such as: Quote:
"A large, asymmetrical map centered about a mountain range. A waterfall flows from the range, bisecting the map. Two bridges and several ground paths are in place to cross this waterfall/stream. On one side we see a large, hilly field, dotted with Forerunner towers, culminating in a large cliff drop that opens out to a fabulous sky near the edge of the Halo ring. On the other side is a larger Forerunner structure built into the cliffside and mountain range. This structure features a walled exterior that stretches beyond the confines of the map. Ribs/Braces are evenly spaced along the wall. Several doors, large and small, let into the interior of the structure, with several rooms along the way, ultimately ending up in a large Forerunner mechanical chasm that extends beyond visibility." Well shoot...I might have just given myself a good design theme. But I don't know how to design for Firefight yet. I can do a pretty good multiplayer design, however.

Huge box mapping with some random bases isn't good multiplayer FPS design, let this be clear. SeL's requiem on the other hand is. Self promotion with nothing to actually back this up isn't a good thing around here.
And a certain mapping team that made a certain succesful SP map may attempt to make their own firefight map that may already have a design on paper as well. Though of course this is not certain.

It was directed at your self-promotion which was based upon a kilometer large map that is supposed to provide a competitive and exciting FPS gaming experience, a self-conclusion that does not hold any value. Thus making me to believe you wouldn't nail an exciting firefight map most likely. I continued my post by saying a certain mapping team may be designing a firefight map of their own, although it is not certain.
Don't take this as a personal attack by the way, people tent to misinterpret my posts, which I suppose would be a flaw in my posting style. But people don't change.

What's wrong with a kilometer large map? A large map certainly provides a competitive and exciting FPS gaming experience if done right. And I'm sure Gonzo can do it right. ;)

Did you interpret my theme suggestion as a summary of my map? Because my map and that suggestion are totally different. For starters, that suggestion is for a map about the size of Outlook (a little bigger), which is actually where I drew inspiration from.
Other than that, I said 'after I finish Requiem (which is coming along, albeit slowly)' because 1) I don't want to commit to something until I finish the map, and 2) I've been taking a heck of a long time to finish it. I anticipated someone would inevitably state that my map has made no progress. I just wanted to preemptively counter that. I honestly am not trying to self-promote; that's why I have a whole thread for my map! Yay!
Thanks, Jaz. I like making large, epic scale maps, because it gives me lots to work with. But a Firefight would be a welcome challenge, since I've never done that.

What's wrong with a kilometer large map? A large map certainly provides a competitive and exciting FPS gaming experience if done right. And I'm sure Gonzo can do it right. ;) Not really, first of all you'll barely come across any enemies. Second of all you need to navigate this huge landscape with a variety of vehicles, the landscape should be fun to traverse with ALL provided vehicles and weapons in the map. Traversing an essentially flat map with a warthog can never be exhilerating or fun. The terrain itself also lacks any points of tactical interest, such as for example a central forerunner structure that could hold a game-tipping weapon or vehicle. As I said in his thread, I can go on about this, but I need to tend to my spinach. And discussion about this topic should be limited to that thread, since this is about firefight maps and not gonzo's selt-promotion. Therefore I will now tend to my spinach and only reply to this particular topic in gonzo's thread.

I said I wasn't trying to self-promote. Yikes. I didn't know mentioning my map once in a short sentence would count as a dishonorable self-promotion. My bad.
My suggestion is for a small firefight map, as I have already stated. It's not a scaled down Requiem. It's a brand-spaken knew design that I literally thought up on the fly. It's far from ideal, so please don't treat it as a legit proposal....yet. I just included it as an example of what I meant by theme. I recognize what makes a firefight map fun. Implementing that knowledge successfully is the challenge I look forward to, and if I do undertake this project, rest assured I won't release it until I get enough criticism to feel confident that the community believes my implementation is good.
Enjoy your spinach, Popeye.

moving back on topic.... this topic is about a installation 04 firefight map. weather or not it will be fun is up to the player to decide. that being said caboose i like where you are taking your firefight map but if i may, some suggestions; STOP WORKING ON HOW IT LOOKS. make it playable FIRST. i don't mean to show an favoritism but look at one successful mapping team: TM. they work on gameplay FIRST, then work on making it look good. to be honest i could do textures that are a billion times better then the ones ya got an even the ones that anniversary has rn (maybe cuz those are the beta textures idk?) but the point is work on the actual firefight, the anniversary flythru on youtube shows at least 2 drop zones for enemies, work on getting the ai right for your odst allies and stick with a classic tagset for now, once those things are accomplished THEN lets worry about making it pretty. there are a lot of things to get working before we worry about like getting the warthog to be a fun vehicle with the drops and the ai to move properly without being dull, boring and repetitive, and a freaking scoring system? so people can have bragging rights? so my advice is work on the gameplay with stock assets that everyone is familiar with and then we can worry about how it looks.
