SO this time:

The software license check out failed. Error 20

No idea what it means. I tried a couple things form online and they didn't work. At all. I tried one that said to delete a .cas file and go this error instead:

The software license check out failed. Error 41

Any ideas?

I believe those errors are for when it believes your computer should of had registration of any type at one time, but cant find it. Basically if you have reinstalled windows, and tossed the trial on, etc. Basically, it wants you to buy the program, and register it fully, etc. I'm fairly sure thats what error I get when I try to install max 8 on a fresh install of windows (where it wont let me run it until its activated, etc. idk how it knows ive had max installed on it before since hte hard drive is formatted lol)

I have the full version and it has been paid for. It just doesn't want to run at all. I haven't re-installed windows or anything. The only changes I have made to my comp since it was last working is moving the IDE drive to another port so that the DVD drive and the hard drive are on the same cable. I doubt that would affect it though. As far as I know it is still registered as when I looked at in in regedit the code was the same as always. Nothing was different as far as I could see.

so it must be checking the other IDE location for the licence I guess. And did you backup that other file? by the fact it has a different error code.. you probably deleted something important.

It might be checking the other IDE port. However that port is absolutely dead. That is why I moved the HD and the DVDD on the same cable. 3ds is installed on a SATA drive. Unfortunately I have no way to see if it would work with the other port. And re-installing it would be tricky. I just checked and this also happened with 3ds 12 (2010)

Edit:

Found a solution:
Quote: I found a solution for the people that reinstalling and renaming the files did not work.
1: Pull up run and type in services.msc
2: Ckick on the standard tab at the bottom.
3: Find FLEXnet licensing service.
4: Right click on it and press propoties.
5: Make the start-up type Automatic.
6: Under “service Status”, press start.
Your 3ds max should now work fine. The way I have found this out was when I used to use 3ds max 9 32-bit, the licensing service sometimes became disabled so I had to change it like that. From previous comments talking about FLEXnet, i saw that in services.msc and fixed it.
Hope this helps! Chris
