So I've installed windows 7 (snow leopard ftw!), and installed HEK, and after doing some tagwork, I decided to turn off UAC. Some of my folders in guerilla though have a lock symbol next to the folder icon, and these folders don't appear in windows explorer, but worst of all I can't drag other folders into the folders I created that have the lock next to them. I been reorganizing a tagset all day, so please don't tell me it was all for nothing because I didn't turn off UAC as soon as I got the computer up and running.

Edit: Apparently I can't drag the locked folders out of guerilla either, it says the files do not exist?

oh you are a god! what the hell is this feature, and why is it so bad?

Alright, and now it isn't letting me drag them back in. wtf

The UAC controls the windows security model. It should NEVER be turned off. Doing so compromises security. The people who say they know what they are doing by turning it off proved they don't by that action. Re-enable it. so you can access the security functions then right click on the Halo Custom Edition folder and change the rights to just that folder and child folders to give you full access. No program in the user context should be able to change data in the \Program Files folders.

Thanks Dennis, I have it re-enabled and I right clicked on the custom edition folder, and the only place I see to change settings is in the properties window, but there seems to be nothing i can do. How do I recover my files out of the "virtual folder" directory?

The virtual directory is as follows:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\tags

On the HEK side of OpenSauce, we've addressed these kinds of issues (I use UAC) by allowing the user to override the various paths (eg, tags, data, etc) used by the tools via an xml file in the same folder as the EXE. It also helps when you have multiple tag sets, as it allows you to specify the tags folder name (eg, "tags_h2ce"), and it will use that instead of the bare default (ie, "tags"). The xml file allows you to specify different "profiles", and you can select the different profiles via a command line switch (except for OS_Tool).

To give an example, this is what I use for my test builds:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\
tags

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\data\

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\
tags

C:\Mount\B\Kornner\test\data\

edit: OK Dennis, your board eats XML tags. Here's the http://kornner.com/yelo/halo1/ce/OS_Settings.Editor.xml for anyone who cares.

Select Properties then the security tab. You can then move the tags from the compatibility folders. If you are never going to distribute the tags themselves and just compile maps then you can use it in the compatibility mode with no problem where it can be an issue is if you want to bundle tags sets.

As annoying as the UAC may be you should never run as administrator for anything but purely administrative tasks. It is one of the basic tenets of computer security.

Yes it does. I never got around to correcting that in the original code because the author used an arcane method of making the posts safe from tag injection. One day.

Right clicking, properties, run as admin solves everything for me...

While the intent of UAC is nice, the fact is that it is annoying for the average user. The simple solution for the average Joe is to just disable it. Hopefully a future windows will make this feature more user-friendly, or perhaps just have it run in the background somehow.
Turning it off is a lot more dangerous than it is helpful. Once it's off, anything can access anything. (Including your gay porn folder I'm sure you don't have, my dear Lodex, but I mean more along the lines of personal files, passwords, accounts etc.)

Of course using a smart, modern, unix based OS solves that problem :p. My windows 7 box is purely just for HEK, everything else I just use my Macbook for.

Most of this coonversation isn't making much sense to me. But I'm having the "Compatibility files" problem too. SO, what you guys are saying is that this "UAC" thing is responsible for the "Compatibility files", but you shouldn't turn it off for security reasons?
No it isn't. The entire security model of Windows has been changed since Vista and the UAC (User Account Control) is the module that notifies you when something is trying to change or write to protected files or folders. In the new model the default state is that you run as a user and not an administrator, like in previous versions of windows, so any program that runs in the user context can not make changes to the secured folders like \Program Files. The UAC allows you as a user to make some administrator changes with permission. Before in XP and earlier you ran in the administrator context and any program running in that context had full reign over your computer.

Masters, make sure you run every HCE program that compiles data/tags into a (HEK+, Guerilla, Sapien, TOOL) folder with Administrator (right click and run as Administrator) because if you don't it'll do that annoying 'compatibility folder junk.'

This includes the gay porn folder that none of the members here have, dear Dennis.
I really don't care if you have a gay porn folder or not.

I was making a point. I'm disgusted at the fact you actually let people post such things.
The point did not escape me and neither did the irony of someone who routinely trolls the forum being upset that he was trolled.

Well, to be fair, he did report someone posting gay porn on the forums to you, and you did nothing about it and let it continue.
