How does 90mm of Tungsten strike you?

Posted: Jul 1, 2011 02:44 AM    Msg. 1 of 17
Hello All
Just a curious Note. I have Santuary_Final MP map, and I want to extract it to make my own version of it with AI. When looking at the content in HEK+, Everything isn't in folders and is all marked , so it doesn't tell me what is the file's name. Can I still be able to rip the files to access the map on Sapien? Please Reply back when you know. Thanks

That's because the maker of the map protected it by encrypting a password so people can't extract tags from it. The only way you can get the scenario from it is by knowing the password, or finding it from a different map that has that bsp.

Or you could use this http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=5601 this tool will allow you to unprotect map and can be extract using HEK + just search the BSP and go but the names are different.

Most useless program ever. A hex editor can do the same thing.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't credit those who protect maps; those who release unprotected maps, however, are given each and every credit. The reason is simple: you don't want the community to grow by sharing the little knowledge you have? Then you deserve nothing. I mean, not even Bungie itself bothered to protect its tags (even long after Adjutant was out), and you deny people the chance to grow? Thanks, but no thanks. Everything I've tagged up to now was due to those who didn't protect their tags, not the others.

Just my 2 cents

PS It's not like I release many things, but whatever.

The only use a protected map would have in my view would be if you were releasing a beta and you didn't want any one to play around with your tags yet since they weren't final.

You wouldn't imagine in my beta how many brilliant ideas I put. I scrapped them for various reasons; be it because I couldn't get them to work with the tools I had, be it because I didn't find a way to use them properly, be it because I've found better ways to achieve what I wanted or just because they simply didn't appeal my taste; the same ideas, in different hands, could have had awesome results. The first I could think of was a cube map joined with a shader_transparent_chicago tag to render a shield. It looked great, but I scrapped it because I couldn't get it to work as I wanted. Someone else would probably have done it; you get what I'm saying?

Hmmm I do. I still think protected maps are important, but shouldn't be handed out as a final/public builds.

I can't agree with you here buddy, can you elaborate as to why you think they are important?

I think it's useful when giving out public betas and things.
The map becomes public for a wide range of tests, yet protected to that people won't tamper with it and claim it as their own.

Well for example going off personal experience. I loaded up a map with a couple of halo3 weapons with custom firing fx ages ago and gave it to a few people. (as a beta)

3 days later I saw my fx tags were used is someone elses map. I wasn't upset that they used those tags, I was upset by the fact that they uploaded my wip work without permission. Even though I clearly stated in the readme

"please notify me if you are going to use these I might have a better version"

I will admit my whole motivation for adding that clause was purely selfish.

By that I meant I didn't want other people to see my half assed work in a map when if the author of the map could have contacted me earlier I could have had better and less embarrassing results for him.

I can understand that. That's more or less the same reason I haven't released anything yet and why I refuse to make WIP threads for projects where the release date is nowhere in sight.
