Alright, so let's say I have a model. Let's imagine it was made from a plane so it has open edges. If I made a huge box that surrounded the model, and then linked the model to the giant box.
Would the box do both: a) serve as the frame? b) get rid of open edges error?

No. Halo follows the Seal World Rules. the frame can be a teapot if you want, it just serves as the reference. Making a big box won't fix you plane model from beeing unsealed. Think of it as needing to be water tight ( but not only visually). Inside your Skybox you can have 3 submodels (boxes) but they each individually need to be sealed inside or outside.
