In gmax when i try to add shaders to the cliffs the bitmap is only added to the top part of the map (that you cant see/where the skybox is) and its not adding the bitmap to the actual cliffs.

Is there an easy way to select the cliffs and only the cliffs?

try just selecting the cliffs and then drag the material/bitmap thing onto the model and then deselect :S

Well yeah i guess. The tut says to be very careful that you only select the cliffs, but i don't know how to only select the cliffs. Do you have to use a certain view?

which view you use would depend on the shape of your map,i find it easier to just left click and highlight the poly's i want to select, then for any i missed i would hold down CTRL and select the rest.(CTRL basically lets you select continous poly's same goes for vert's,edges etc to select more than 1 just hold CTRL).

It sounds like you just need to select by ID under Polygon > Surface Properties. This assumes you already assigned the appropriate ID to the cliff faces. If not, then you must manually select your faces (though you can use different views to lasso as much as you can).

Also, a tip: if you accidentally select a bunch of faces you don't want, you don't have to reselect everything, and you don't have to manually deselect each face you don't want. Simply use Alt and lasso the faces you don't want in your selection. Ctrl adds to your selection; Alt subtracts.
