so my friend went out and bought halo PC, downloaded custom edition, and plays online a bit. but there is no text on the side of the screen and whenever he tries typing the black box appears but no text that he types appear in it. hes in windows XP. halp?

There was a time I installed CE (I have XP too) and the same thing would happen, try going to the "redist" folder in the root directory of CE and install the "msxmlenu" installer package.
