I've been soiling myself to skin a gun (arrr skidrow), and I've tried several different ways, none of which work the right way. I can't find a good tutorial on the net, so I was hoping somebody over here can help me.

BTW. I've tried the very obvious 'move the mesh away' then 'apply skin' then 'move to place', but whenever I open and close max to work with it again, the mesh is completely effed up.

By skin, I mean skin modifier. Frame gun, frame mag, frame bullet, frame ophandle, etc.

Editable mesh.
Select the faces you want to texture first.
Go to m0difiers/UVW map.
Select the ALIGNMENT (X, Y, or Z) that makes the texture actually appear. It might be tiled weird.
Convert to editable mesh again.
With those same faces selected, go to modifiers/Unwrap UVW.
Click EDIT
Now, you have to put the faces onto the texture in this window. Drag a box around them, and use the move, rotate, scale, mirror and whatever tools to place them correctly. When you;re done you can convert to editable mesh again, and your changes will stick.
Repeat. If you're using several IDs, make sure the faces you want have the right ID. In EDIT, you can switch the bitmap you're looking at in the top-right corner of the... editor thing.

You shouldn't use the skin modifier on weapons. Detach each part of the weapon, so you have several meshes. Then link the meshes to the nodes.
