why does my HEk + crash every time i use the top menu or right click in the tags?

you are running vista/windows 7 right?
HEK+ doesn't really like desktop composition, so right-click the program .exe, go to properties -> compatability and select disable desktop composition. |

I don't think it crashes; just freezes. Is that true with other windows 7 members?

It freezes, and if you click it a few times, it'll stop responding. Do what sargejohnson said, and disable desktop composition.
