how do you make bsp's from scratch and what exactly are they for?

they're the 3d model of the map/level/playing field. you need a 3d modelling program like gmax or 3dsmax to make them. gmax is free.

i have 3ds max and have made many halo maps. i just wanted to know how they made the original maps with the bsp flow. i want to know whether you need to add a plane in the 3d model to tell the engine where the next bsp is or whether you have to do it all in sapien. if its all in sapien, i would like to know how to set it all up and create the bsp's.
