I get this error when I try to build my map from a JMS:

Are you using gmax or 3ds max?

I am using 3ds max 8. My friend modeld the map and textured it. Low poly. Bout 5000. All one "cube" I just want to build it so I can start adding stuff.

File-> Import -> Change File type to VRML.
Locate mapname.wrl in Halo Custom Edition folder.
Import it.
you should see some lines around where there are errors. Use the create tool in editable poly/mesh to fill in the spaces.
