Couldn't update edge is one of the geometry errors tool gives you when you brake HALO's sealed world rules. I've forgotten which error it is but for most geometry errors most pepole say to try selecting all the verticies in your model and welding at something like 0.1.
With the .gbxmodel HALO doesn't care if you follow the sealed world rules, only the collison models (and bsps since they are colidable) need to follow the sealed world rules.
The offical HEK tutorial (I think it's a html document) that comes with the HEK will explain most of the geometry errors to you.
As the collision model is invisible what I tend to do is make an alternitive model which is just a series of boxes in the rough shape of my vehicle or scenery (for weapons I useally have no collision).
As for bipeds I don't know how the game knows what part of the body is the head, I'm guessing there is some special collision required for this.
