ive posted alot of qeustions recently becuase im new to map making for halo ce. but it seems like every time i get help and a problem gets solved 2 more things go wrong. i have been watching alot of tutorails on how to make a map but for some reason they never have any problems at all. basicly im following the tutorials to a tee and every thing i attempt spirals out of control into some error ridden hell. but for starters here are some problems

-when ever i make a map i get ready to export the map my 3ds max says one of the following:3ds max has encountered an unexpected error and will now close,
no geometry to export (and yes the skybox was linked to the frame)

-if i ever do have the outstanding luck to get a map to export as a jms file (which has happened only once) and i run it through tool to make tag for the level, i get: could not read \tool.beta (or something like that)

-and i don't know what in fresh hell this is but when i get guerilla to make a shader for the map i don't get any errors but when i check in the directory i can't find it it (this also happens to other things i do with guerilla too)

halo custom edition\tags\levels\splinter\shaders\

there are many other things i came across but if i decided to write them this post would be 4 miles long and no one would read it

so basicly heres what im asking, can anyone walk me through making a map step by step or can anyone point me in the direction of some tutorails that are very noob freindly(preferably for 3ds max 8)

and incase any one cares my xfire is randomteddybear

and my email is randomteddybear@gmail.com

Hay I'm new to map makeing to, but I have actually gotten on emap into the game. (When I did it I was like "HOLY BLAM IT WORKED!!). The hardest and most problematic part I find is almost alwais the compilation with tool, which failes if you have even the tineyest error. Anyway, let me see...

1: What version on 3ds max are you useing and what are you useing to export (blitkrieg plug in or bluestreak script). If you're useing blitzkrieg, make sure it's compatable with your 3ds max version.

2: Don't worry about any "can't find _____beta" errors. Egnor them.

3: I have no clue how to make shaders. I don't even know how to use any that aren't in the tutorial. If you do, pleas help me!

4: Ya, I have TONS of probems to.

Okay

1: The first error message would mean that 3ds crashed. I never found out how to fix it, I just remade the model I was doing.

The second error message is your frame.
Checklist:
Is the box called frame?
Is the skybox(level) linked to the frame, not the other way around?

2. As has been said, the toolbeta error is not something to worry over. Ignore it. My debug.txt is FILLED with toolbeta errors, D=

3. So wait, you open guerilla, go, File->New, select your shader type (should be shader_environment for the map textures), then add the detail levels and everything, then the base map as your texture. Then you go File->Save into your shaders folder?

That should save there...make sure it's tags, not data.

To conclude this, I would suggest getting yayap's tutorial.

It's not for 3ds 8, it's for gmax, but it uses the same type of structure really. My first map was made using that tut =D (btw, that map was epic fail)

Hope this helps...(now to go eat lunch)

all right i got gmax but i have a problem with it(not surprisingly) its almost like 3ds max except when i apply the textures (the ground is what seemed to do it the most) is like looking through a fish eye lens (running in heidi) and yes im running vista and yes i tried changing the veiwport rendering to open gl and direct 3d but the veiwports turn white when i move my perspective

Er...are you saying the textures are really screwed up?

If they are, convert to editable mesh, select the ground faces, select the modifier UVW Map, and edit the values =D

Epic death XD

Nah, it's alright, just not that good of a thing to do. Creates extra polys, faces, whatnot. Press F9 and it'll show you a better picture, a render (halo would look SOMETHING like this)
