I'm new to Halo map making, and just downloaded the HEK. To my dismay, I've discovered that I need something else - 3ds max, which I have to pay for or download for a mere free 30 days. I've read about something else - Gmax - and wonder if I can use this free program to create Halo maps without any other downloads, and whether or not it is as easy (or for me right now, hard) as 3ds max.
Thanks.
Edit: oh, and I did read the sticky about "before you edit/make maps", but obviously my confusion is unsettled (hence the thread).

well 3ds max is expensive... but gmax is a downgraded version of 3ds max i think its 5... but anyway gmax is the only free suported modeling program for halo. so if you want to make halo maps but dont have 3 grand setting around use gmax. It does have some less fetures but it comes down to the point of what do you want to do with it?

You didn't read the sticky correctly as it in there said.
"3d Modeling Program
GMAX - (free)
http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax
note: you may use other 3D modeling programs but GMAX is the only free one fully supported"

Yes you can use it for halo map making, why else would it be in the sticky.

You need gmax, and an exporter which is another download/ad on. You need chimp or bluestreak with gmax.

3ds max is a far better modeler and even has it's own better exporter but gmax still works, it's still a challege and you can't do as many advanced stuff with it. But it works, you won't be able to do advanced stuff for a long time anyhow.

Keep in mind making maps isn't easy, it's a huge challenge. View some tuts first and make up your mind on if it's for you or not.
