I agree, people underrate gearbox's effort in Halo PC and CE. But, there could have been a somewhat simple solution to solving the issue with latency and having to aim ahead, which would have been client-side determinations instead of server-side.
For example, in Halo 3, if your bullet hits an enemy in your instance of the game, it doesn't matter if it hit that enemy on anyone else's instance of the game. The host approves it as a hit. In this case, any action of each client counts as it is seen for that client. This kind of system is much, much better for people with slow connections.
But, in Halo PC, if a bullet hits a player on your instance of the game, it doesn't matter if it hit on anybody else's instance of the game. If it didn't hit on the server's instance of the game, it's not a hit. The server decides all. That is why you have to aim ahead. It is so that the latency between you and the server is made up for by aiming where the player will be by the time the server receives the fact that you shot, so that the server sees your shot as a hitting the enemy.
This system gives a large disadvantage to slower connections, BUT if it were client-side connections in Halo, any moron with devmode could spawn weapons, make himself invincible, and generally wreck havoc in any server, because whatever he does counts as reality. Basically, any sort of cheating would be much easier.
Whoa. That was long.

Server side determinism was a Microsoft spec item. It is also why it took so long for a single cheat to emerge, unlike all other popular games that have so many cheats whole third party systems have had to be put in place. There are pros and cons to each system. Gearbox built what was specified.

Sounds like Gearbox was given a bad hand with that. Kiwi usually gets aroundor below 100, depending on server, of course.

Quote: Thats why I rarely play halo ce anymore, it laggs so much or people think im hacking so they ban me or kick me cause i lagg them I hate people who do that. Personally, I've always had a great connection, but I've always despised the ignorance of those who accuse others with slow connections of being "laggers". First of all, I'm pretty sure that it is impossible for any client's connection to slow down the host's connection. Any lag that players receive is either because of their own connection faults, or because of the server's, not other players. That is also why I get mad at those who complain about a crappy server connection when they are the only ones lagging. It's pretty clear when the server is lagging, because then everybody complains around the same time. These people have to think before they type. red_button, if someone bans/kicks you for lag, just be satisfied with the fact that they are idiots. It's not your fault.
